Today the Kingswood is an affordable and usable classic.
You’ve got to love one-family-owned cars. There’s something real about them, a case in point being this 1975 Holden HJ Kingswood Vacationer II sedan. An original survivor, this Vacationer has been in the hands of a single family since being bought new in 1975. The first owner kept it until 2007, when he sold it to his nephew, our vendor.
Previously on full Victorian registration from new and now indicating 200, 181km, the HJ sedan has been garaged all its life and it shows. The Vacationer’s body is fairly straight and still wears its largely original Contessa Gold Metallic paint with Brown roof, both of which wear the usual marks of time. There’s a few chips and scratches, a few small areas of rust and what appears to be some duco repairs around the right rear guard, evidenced by flaking paint in the passenger door opening. This Kingswood SL also features period factory accessories like the driver’s door window deflector, chrome wheel trim rings, mudflaps, and a towbar.
Inside, the Premier interior (an option) is also largely original and in very good condition for its age. Interestingly, despite bucket seats being a popular option in period, this example is fitted with the Kingswood’s standard front bench seat (which has likely been retrimmed) in a cabin that is a sea of tan vinyl. The original factory radio is still in the dashboard and a period aftermarket central stoplight fitted to the rear window. Under the bonnet is the original 202ci six-cylinder, mated to the three-speed auto which came standard with the Vacationer pack.
With single family ownership from new, in good condition, this 1975 HJ Kingswood sedan is a prime example of our locally made automotive heritage. When was the last time you saw a Holden Vacationer?
