SUMMARY

Originally supplied by Rose & Young, Caterham, and still carrying the original dealer sticker in the rear window, which is still in excellent condition probably down to the car being garaged, this very early 190E 2. 6 is finished in the rare and rather attractive colour combination of 432 Havana Brown (known as Bison Brown in some markets) with the super rare Beige Velour interior; the most expensive interior option for the W201 at the time and more expensive than leather. Ordered new by a London Photographic Company, this would have been quite some car when new back in the April of 1987; I was 20 years old back then and would have given my left arm to own a car like this.

Now some 37 years later, this very rare example is still in lovely condition, although as you'd expect there are a few minor marks and imperfections commensurate with a vehicle of this age and mileage; that said its certainly worn better than I have, and unlike me, still turns heads; the Havana brown paintwork almost has a purple hue in direct sunlight. Underside is exceptional, and it certainly doesn't look it's age, whilst the 15-hole alloys have been recently refurbished and are shod with excellent matching Bridgestone tyres.

Service history is impressive too, the service booklet contains 21 stamps, which is then continued in the large A4 lever file of invoices; it was serviced 7 times by the supplying dealership before being sold by Mertrux, Derby in 1991 to a Gentleman from Ashbourne, Derbyshire whose family kept this car for many years. It passed through several members of his family before being sold in 2019. More recently it has passed through the hands of several Mercedes Club members, most known to me. The last owner, has spent around £2500, and countless hours on it; for the jobs he couldn't do himself, it was entrusted to either Mercedes-Benz of Guildford or SS Motors of Weybridge, a highly respected Mercedes Specialist.

Interior is immaculate; the velour doesn't suffer from "bobbling" or wearing of the fabric pile, which I've found can afflict this type of interior. New ribbed over mats protect the carpet, which are in equally superb condition. Door cards are incredibly good too; in fact its almost unheard of the find a W201 with perfect door cards, especially one of this vintage. The car is also fitted with a period correct and working Blaupunkt Cambridge Tape/ Tuner.

The car drives superbly, in fact its difficult to believe this car is almost 40 years old, and underlines just how good these cars were when they were launched. A drive in an almost new 190E back in 1986 at the age of 19 absolutely blew my mind, and was what got me into these cars, and is the reason I'm still obsessed with them right up to this day. At the last count well over two hundred W201's have passed through my hands over the last twenty odd years, and I can tell you this one drives better than most. The six cylinder 2. 6's are all special, and made the W201 the car is should have always been, and to drive a good one really underlines that.

Now normally I'd be advertising a car like this for around the £10K mark, in fact this very car was previously advertised for around £9K by the previous owner, who I took it in part exchange from against an S500L. However although there's nothing listed on the V5 (logbook) in May 2002, 21 years ago, the car was listed as a Category C, probably after a very minor bump. This will have been when the car was right at the bottom of its value curve, so it would have been easy to make even small repairs even after a minor bump, uneconomic. And it must have been very minor, as I can’t find any evidence of any major damage, or repairs, and if they’re had have been any bad repairs, they’d have certainly manifested themselves by now. I also think that it’s so long ago now, it really makes very little difference now, and if you're taking the car to register it abroad, it won't matter anyway. I always kick myself for not buying a 190E Evo back in 2012, that was also listed on a category c; whoever bought that car more than quadrupled their money on it when it was sold five years later, the category made no difference to it, as the car was so rare.

I've been dealing and been involved with the W201 for well over 20 years now, and its so heartening to see the model is at last getting the recognition it deserves. I've always said that the W201 will go down as one of the best Mercedes Passenger Cars of the last forty years. If the W201 project had failed, given the colossal investment in its development, Mercedes wouldn't be here today. As such, failure just wasn't an option, and as a result they produced one of the finest saloon cars ever made; it was actually dubbed the "baby S-Class" at the time.

Finally, another big bonus here, is when this car reaches 40 years old in the not too distant future, it will qualify as an Historic Vehicle and will be Tax, MOT and ULEZ/ CAZ exempt.

THE MTSV DIFFERENCE

Unlike some, I don't just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won't notice…I just couldn't do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business.

Any other questions, please feel free to contact me. I've been dealing in Mercedes-Benz vehicles for almost 20 years, but I'm a firstly and foremostly a true car enthusiast of many more years, and a Mercedes Club Member, so it's a pleasure to meet and speak to like-minded people.

Finally, I'm situated in Keighley, West Yorkshire (Postal Code Area BD21) which is approximately 11 miles from Skipton, and 20 miles West of Leeds.

All major debit/ credit cards accepted.
