Online and at Haynes International Motor Museum
Being sold without reserve
Registration number 578 VWL
Early version of Mobylette AV89
Owned for 15 years
This is a very early Raleigh RM5 known as the swinging arm version due to the front suspension design
The Raleigh RM5 Supermatic had many of the same parts as the Mobylette AV89
Raleigh assembled the Motobecane (Mobylette) parts under licence to produce the RM5 inside the factory in Nottingham, where they also made some slight modifications, including the attractive round Raleigh badge on the fuel tank
The Raleigh RM5 and Mobylette AV89 were very collectable in France, USA and Bermuda as well as in the UK, due to the improved performance compared to standard 49cc mopeds
The 18 inch wider wheels, featured drum brakes, the frame design and styling also created a moped of significant desirability
The engine has a compression ratio of 9 to 1 compared to 6. 5 to 1 of the Raleigh RM4, giving a power of 2. 66 b. h. p at 5600 r. p. m
This was almost double compared to the very early RM4 models (1960-63) which only had 1. 39 b. h. p at 4, 000 r. p. m.
The only other two seater Raleigh model as powerful as this in the Raleigh Moped range was the RM12 which is even rarer to find
A rare moped requiring restoration
