Ineos describes the Grenadier as “an uncompromising, no-frills, no-fuss vehicle that provides the best-in-class off-road capability, durability and utility”. Serving as the top-trim, Fieldmaster is designed for lifestyle customers, and adds some luxuries on top of the Trialmaster’s equipment.
Ineos clearly cherry-picked from a global list of the top suppliers for the Grenadier - BMW providing the six-cylinder B58 turbocharged petrol engine which makes 282bhp and delivers a 0 -62mph time of 8. 8 seconds.
The eight-speed auto is the same ZF-sourced unit that’s used by BMW and this sends drive to all four wheels via a Tremec transfer case that offers high and low-range gears.
Ineos went to Brembo for the brakes, tractor specialists Carraro for the solid beam axles and Recaro for the seats.
Blending tech and the old-school, there is a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, plus a few other clever features to help with off-roading, but the centre console has loads of chunky dials and buttons that, in theory, can be operated when you’re wearing gloves.
Your favourite feature will be the airliner-style overhead panel with controls for off-roading and powered accessories. You just want to play with the toggles and buttons, and pretend you’re preparing for take-off!
