One of France’s earliest Grand Marques, Delaugere began as a coachbuilding firm in 1864 before fielding its first motorised vehicle, a three-wheeler, some thirty-four years later. A regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon, the Orleans-based firm won numerous medals for its designs which often followed Panhard et Levassor practice. Joining forces with the engine builder Clayette in 1905, the company offered some of the most expensive cars in Europe and enjoyed a stock capitalisation beyond that of Peugeot or the Renault Brothers. Introduced in 1904, the Type 4A was powered by a large capacity (over 6-litre) four-cylinder engine allied to four-speed manual transmission. The rear wheels were chain-driven and the model typically fitted with four-seater coachwork in open or closed guises. Notable for its more sophisticated valve gear and ignition system, the Type 4AM was otherwise an obvious evolution of its predecessor.
