This 1971 US-imported Westfalia Weekender, affectionately known as “Wendy,” began life in Canyon County, California. Upon arrival in the UK in 2010, she was solid but tired, clearly in need of some careful restoration. The team at Rackhams Auto Body Centre in Ipswich took on the project, delivering a comprehensive rebuild while preserving originality wherever possible.
The van was stripped back to its bare bones for inspection and, remarkably, required no major panel replacements—just a new battery tray and a few small patches. From there, the bodywork was gently massaged to remove minor dents before being repainted in its original white finish.
Mechanically, Wendy received a thorough overhaul. A fully reconditioned engine and gearbox were installed, along with a new starter motor, upgraded braking system, and refreshed hydraulic components. The wheels and bumpers were shot-blasted and refinished, and both front and rear windscreens were replaced with heated glass, complete with new rubber seals. All exterior trim, including the distinctive bumper overriders, was renewed with quality components.
Inside, the original wood cabinetry was beyond saving—delaminated and deteriorated—so Newton Commercial used the originals as templates to create new CNC-cut cabinetry from lightweight, moisture-resistant MDF. Upholstery was refreshed in rich blood red vinyl, including a pair of Suffolk reclining front seats. Creature comforts include a top-spec fridge, an LCD TV, a modern split charging system, and a high-capacity leisure battery. Up front, the cab features a Bird shifter, new rubber mats, and a CD/ MP3 stereo system.
