THE PAGANI HUAYRA R
The 2022 Pagani Huayra R was the final iteration of the Huayra lineage, a no-compromise expression of speed, art and engineering by the visionary Horacio Pagani, designed specifically for the race track. It was developed as a bookend to the street-legal Huayra, in the same way as the Zonda R was the swansong to the Zonda bloodline. Appropriately named for the Incan god of wind, the Huayra was the spiritual successor to the legendary Zonda, continuing founder Horacio Pagani's vision of pushing the boundaries of design and aerodynamics. Unrestricted by road regulations, the limited 'R' edition was considered the "the freest, most extreme and performance-oriented Pagani car of all time."
Introduced initially in 2011 at the Geneva Motor Show, the Huayra underwent several iterations, with the 2022 version representing a refined culmination of over a decade of innovation. Each Huayra is hand-built at the Pagani headquarters in Modena, Italy, where aerospace-grade materials and obsessive attention to detail are hallmarks of the brand. The Huayra R however, shares only some core design language with the road-going version of its namesake, as every component from monocoque to engine is bespoke and reimagined specifically to meet the demands of high-performance racing. To mark the car's exclusivity, only 30 examples were built in all and each one is tailor-made to the owner's specifications, making no two Huayras exactly alike.
The Huayra R is powered by the 6. 0-liter naturally aspirated V12-R engine, developed in partnership with HWA, a Mercedes-AMG subsidiary. The powerplant redlines at an earsplitting 9, 000 rpm and produces 850 horsepower at 8, 250 rpm, with 553 ft-lb at 5500-8300 rpm all without the turbochargers of the standard Huayra. This configuration delivers pure, linear power and an unforgettable exhaust note likened to the soundtrack of the Formula 1 engines of the 1980s. This was intentional and largely achieved by the custom designed lightweight exhaust system developed in thin ceramic coated Inconel 625/ 718 alloy. The 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels receive power via a bespoke non-synchronized 6-speed sequential gearbox designed especially for the 'R' by HWA, weighing just 80kg. It is bolted directly to the monocoque as a stress member providing lightning fast shifting with maximum durability under strenuous track conditions. Equally, the ultra-light carbon composite monocoque chassis is immensely rigid, yet weighs just 2, 314 pounds, underlining Pagani's expertise in maximizing strength and durability, while minimizing weight load.
The body monocoque is a study in aerodynamics with a deep roof scoop funneling air towards the V12, plus wheel arch vents, side air intakes, and an extended rear wing. The suspension features aluminum double wishbones, paired with electronically controlled active dampers creating 2, 200 pounds of downforce at 199 mph and enabling the Huayra R to hunker down, while power is reined in by Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes.
The interior, while sparce for economy of weight, retains Pagani's unmistakable artistry. It features FIA GT certified carbon fiber racing seats clothed in flame-retardant material with 6-point harnesses, a full roll cage integrated into the carbon monocoque, digital motorsport display and custom switch gear crafted with the same attention to detail as a luxury timepiece.
THE CAR OFFERED
This Huayra R, built in 2022, is number 23 of the 30 examples completed. Finished matte black exposed carbon fiber with silver accents, and neon yellow striping, this example was delivered new to Miller Motorcars in Greenwich, Connecticut. The black edition exudes stealth and sophistication, because it is not painted blackit is black, thanks to exposed carbon fiber coated with a special transparent finishlaying bare the incredible quality of carbon fiber craftsmanship for which Pagani is famous.
With under 200 kilometers driven since new, the race shows minimal wear not even heat discoloration on the exhaust manifold this Huayra R has seen a life of careful storage with minimal track use. A largely untouched machine, the sole cosmetic change are pink and blue vinyl wraps framing around the top fender intakesa personalized touch that can be easily reversed in minutes. Along with the car are three large cases with spare tires, radios, extra parts, a fridge for drinks, and more along with an additional Huayra R Simulator a factory built driving simulator that exactingly recreates the driving experience of the car itself. It too, rendered in exposed carbon fiber, is the perfect complement to the racer itself and offers the opportunity to 'drive' your Huayra R at any time without even leaving the house.
On static display for the past year, as with any racer, a trip to the shop is recommended prior to hitting the track. More than just a performance machine, the 2022 Pagani Huayra R is a race purist's dreama limited-production, bespoke racecar that represents the passion, precision, and artistic vision of one of the world's most exclusive Italian automakers.
