1992 Naylor / Hutson TF 1700
The TF 1700 was a hand built sports car produced by Naylor Bros and later the Hutson Car Company between 1984 and 1992. It was developed as an improved form of the original MG TF with increased power and improved suspension and braking. The engine used was Austin-Rover's 1. 7-litre, O-Series, overhead-camshaft unit. These cars were hand built in the Bradford factory to a very high standard and even cost more than a Morgan when new! If you have ever driven a 1950's MG TF / TD then this has all the looks but with a much better drive due to the larger engine and more modern gearbox and brakes!
100 cars carrying the Naylor badge were produced in 1985/ 86 and then in 1986 Naylor Cars were acquired by the Hutson Car Company where a further 61 cars with the Hutson badge were produced. They were fully type approved and had full backing from the Austin Rover Group.
This car (chassis no. SA9TFS1M1MA013161) is number '161', the very last car completed by the factory. Kept on showroom display for several years before being registered for the road in 1997, 'L145 KPY' has been owned and enjoyed by my son and I for the last several years and is now only available for sale due to the purchase of a new Morgan.
The car has covered just 27, 000 miles from new and as can be seen from the photos is in great condition for its age and runs/ drives superbly. It has been maintained fastidiously by Yorkshire Restorations and most recently has had the below work completed:
Early 2023 - Replacement original engine sourced by the Hutson Motor Company installed.
Early 2023 - Brand new three part clutch fitted.
Late 2023 - All hoses replaced and a new radiator remanufactured and fitted.
February 2024 - Full service, tune up, rebuild of the carb, brake service along with all oil seals replaced (at a cost of £1, 940).
May 2024 - New alternative and rod bush fitted in May 2024 (at a cost of £410).
May 2024 - 5 brand new tyres fitted and wheels balanced.
July 2024 - Full service undertaken.
August 2024 - New rear shock absorbers and springs fitted. There is also a new set of front springs to come with the car but are yet to be fitted.
October 2024 - Rear axle fully rebuilt (at a cost of £1, 665).
December 2024 - New distributor and rotor arm fitted (at a cost of £275).
September 2025 - Exhaust had new bracket fitted and welded.
I have invoices on file and as can be seen with all this expenditure we had intended to keep the car but since purchasing the Morgan can't warrant keeping both! All this work means that the car is simply ready to be enjoyed by its next owner.
The car comes complete with two keys (one with the original company keyring!), operation manual, service book and owners wallet, workshop manual (printed and on CD), comprehensive service/ history file (in bespoke Hutson ring binder!), original brochures, Naylor/ Hutson books, car magazines (where the car was road tested), Naylor Car Club magazines and even a matching Dinky Toy model!
A classic additions bespoke green indoor car cover (RRP: £145) is also included in the sale along with a pair of new genuine old stock seatbelts and a wicker basket.
There are only two Naylor's for sale at the moment both of which are priced at £20, 000+ so this car is priced to sell!
The MOT (with obviously no advisories) is valid until 22 February 2026 and the car is fully HPI clear (with HPI report in the file).
Founded in 1994, the Naylor Car Club continues to cater for these elegant, traditionally styled British sports cars and is a great resource for sourcing spares or technical information.
