Description
We're delighted to offer this spectacular 1998 Yamaha R1 (4XV) - without doubt the best we have ever seen.
A factory standard (and very early) UK bike from the year of launch (vin: 1194, delivered in March '98), it's likely to have been one of the very first machines ever delivered.
It's hard to sum up just how perfect this bike is without hyperbole. It is astonishing. If you've been waiting for the one - this is it. We have never seen another like it, and we may never again.
Retaining even its original dealer plate (Fowlers), this very rare R-registered bike is a reference example of the probably the most iconic inline 4 superbike of all time. And not just a museum piece, it is in superb mechanical condition too, with a brilliant history.
Please do not be distracted by the modest mileage (22, 000) - this bike has been consistently ridden throughout its life, greatly enhancing its health. As we find time and time again, carb'd bikes that are not routinely used can present real issues with modern ethanol-rich fuels. A regularly exercised bike, with a few more miles, is a better and more reliable proposition at this age than a low/ zero mileage machine.
Extremely collectible, and just wow.

Stunning, from top to bottom. All paintwork is in beautiful condition, and maintains a glossy factory finish throughout. The tank, top yoke, and rider contact areas are all free from any imperfections, and the seat remains unblemished. All switchgear is as new, and is fully functional.
Mechanical condition:
Mechanically, the bike is in superb condition, and rides beautifully. The engine is tight, and a joy to exploit when up to temperature. Of particular note is the quality of the fueling, indicating the health of the carbs. The brakes are feelsome, and the bike pulls up sharply. Throttle and clutch are smooth, likewise the gearbox. All controls function correctly.
What our friends at MCN said:
"The third and final great sports bike of the nineties. The Honda FireBlade set the agenda, the Ducati 916 added finesse and the iconic Yamaha R1 topped them off with extra power and madness. Even today the original Yamaha R1 is a sports tool to be reckoned with and updated Yamaha R1s are even more potent and easier to use too. They say you shouldn’t meet your heroes, but the R1 just makes everything so easy. There are no vibes, knee ache or surprises that mar the experience of riding it, and there’s even a huge space under the pillion seat for a couple of sandwiches. Try that on your Panigale."
