SUMMARY
Ordered new from Waterhouse Mercedes, Chelmsford on 17th September 1992, this gorgeous 190E comes with quite a rare, somewhat basic, yet genius (in my opinion) specification. The first owner had very exacting demands when he ordered this car, in that he wanted something classy looking, but equally wanted it to be simple, ensuring longevity and reliability. Today in a world where the desirability of a vehicle is measured in the number of gadgets it has, many of which are intrusive or just plain annoying, this car goes harks back to a time that when engineering excellence and quality were how a car was judged and nobody did that better than Mercedes-Benz in the 1980’s and early 1990’s.
Finished in quite rare (on a W201) 040 Black with grey MB-Tex interior (possibly the hardest wearing seat covering known to man) this car was specified with longevity and reliability in mind; there’s no sunroof, no electric windows, no annoying electrical gadgets you don’t need. The only extravagances are a set of mudflaps and a Blaupunkt Radio/ Cassette, front speakers and an electric aerial. All this came in at a not so insignificant cost of £15, 200, which was quite a chunk of cash back in 1992…as a comparison at the time, a top of the range Ford Sierra or a Vauxhall Cavalier would set you back around £11K!
The first owner kept this car until his death in 2007, after which his widow inherited it. She used it very, very sparingly at first, covering around 100 miles a year in it up to 2011, however after that it sat unused in the garage it had always occupied until around 2023, as she couldn’t bear to sell it. By then, her health was declining, and she sadly had to go into a care home, so her family had to sell the house and the car.
It found its way into the trade, as at that point the car needed recommissioning as it had effectively been stood for almost 12 years, the last service stamp being logged at 67, 048 miles on 8th October 2007. The recommissioning work was done by a classic MB specialist, and which is listed above. It was both extensive and expensive, running well into four figures, but now after that work, and having being driven around 2000 miles since, the car is in my opinion one of the best driving and sweetest sounding W201’s I’ve come across, and is a testament to how good these cars are. When you drive it, you just can’t help but like it. Forget what you read about manual W201’s, those comments are usually from people who have never driven one. The manual box in this one, is slick, the clutch is light, and it actually allows you to get more out of the engine. Also, that fifth gear gives the car “longer legs” so motorway cruising is more relaxed and hence economical.
What’s more amazing is this car is totally original, its never had any paint, the interior and underside is immaculate, and the dash needles are as orange as the day it was delivered, with no sun fade whatsoever, it difficult to believe it’s almost 33 years old, it still has the look of a new car. The asking price reflects the unique nature of this car; I concede you could buy a similar car cheaper, but to bring that car up to the standard of this one, would cost many times in excess of what you’d save, and not withstanding that, once done, it wouldn’t be original; something you can’t put back, once it’s gone.
I firmly believe this is one of the best W201’s available. It’s totally original and everything that came with it when new, is still there. The service history contains 24 stamps and comes with a large accompanying file of supporting paperwork which begins with the original bill of sale, and clearly demonstrates the exacting nature of its first owner. In mileage terms the service history is full and continues after the car was brought out of storage.
I’ve had almost 250 W201’s pass through my hands over the years, and this one up there with the very best, and one if circumstances would allow, I’d like to keep, as it they are seldom found like this.
MTSV CLASSIC MERCEDES
MTSV (an abbreviation for Mark Taylor Specialist Vehicles) was born out an incurable and lifelong obsession for anything with four wheels on it, especially those carrying the legendary Three Pointed Star. Established by me, Mark Taylor in November 2005 when the Classic Car market was in its infancy and long before “everyman and his dog” had jumped on the Classic Car bandwagon. Specialising in Classic Mercedes from the late 1970’s, through to the 2000’s, I also frequently have the odd foray into other quality classics and sometimes even modern cars, however the qualification is always that it has to be interesting, and/ or just a little different; my theory, which has served me well so far, is that if I like it, someone else probably will!
My main specialisation is the legendary Mercedes W201 190 and Mercedes W124; I firmly believe these models were about as good as cars got in terms of sheer, teutonic quality, and believe them to be the best cars Mercedes have ever made. I’ve built up a substantial knowledge of both the W201 190 & W124 over many years, which I’m always happy to share, and have recently contributed to a W201 buying guide written by Julian Parish. I also have extensive experience of the most of the Mercedes models within my “band of interest” namely the W116, W123, W202 & W203 C-Class, W208 & W209 CLK, W210 & W211 E-Class, W126 & W140 S-Class, R170 & R171 SLK and the R129 SL-Class. Obviously as time goes on later models are coming onto my radar too.
MTSV has always, and will always focus on quality rather than quantity, and in doing so has earned, and continues to maintain an enviable reputation among its many customers both in the UK and abroad, many who are now three, four and even five times repeat customers, some of which have become good friends too. I’m also listed in the Mercedes Club Directory as a recommended business and I’ve also had several of my rarer cars featured in the motoring press too.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business. To read more, see my website.
