HRG 1500 – Chassis W158 | Engine C509R | First Registered December 1948
A truly usable HRG 1500, W158 combines exceptional provenance and usability for postwar motoring enjoyment.
This car retains its matching-numbers 1500cc Singer engine, original interior, and coachwork by REALL —one of the last two cars the firm ever completed. Delivered in December 1948 to Charles Langer, it has enjoyed nine custodians across two continents, with a rich and documented history including encounters with notable figures.
I’m delighted to once again offer this HRG 1500. Our vendor acquired the car from us in summer 2024 to enjoy father–son time on events like the HERO – ERA Shamrock, which they thoroughly loved. During their custodianship, several thoughtful improvements were made, including a new tonneau, hood and side screens. New Blockley tyres have been fitted, the steering wheel has been string-bound, and two Mondi trip computers have been added—one for the driver, one for the passenger. Around £7, 000 has been invested, including a recent service, ensuring the car is ready for immediate enjoyment.
Chassis W158 was stamped on 4th March 1948 and retains matching numbers today, the original 1500cc Singer engine fitted on 8th April 1948. The car was first registered in December 1948 to Charles Langer of Kent.
Over the years, W158 has had nine custodians across two continents. Three of its previous owners have fascinating histories, including encounters with notable historical figures, which are detailed in the accompanying history file.
In 1990, the eighth owner, Dr A G England, repainted the car in British Racing Green (moving away from the original red with red interior). W158 was sold at auction in 2013 as part of Dr England’s estate.
Its subsequent custodian undertook a sympathetic rebuild: the chassis and ancillaries were stripped and painted, the engine was dismantled, cleaned, and rebuilt with worn components replaced, a new clutch fitted, some body panels refreshed, and the electrics upgraded to include indicators.
Following these works, W158 participated in the HRG 80th Anniversary in 2015 and has continued to enjoy road rallies and events. With the VSCC announcement of a new Historic class accepting the 1500 HRG, this car is now eligible for VSCC events—adding yet another layer of enjoyment and usability for the next custodian.
A very usable, historically rich HRG 1500, W158 combines provenance, and genuine driving pleasure. Very much price to sell so the vendor can take advantage of an off market car I have available!
Under offer but I have another available.
