Description

Motodrome offer for sale this 1955 Sunbeam Mark III Drop Head Coupe, finished in Gunmetal Grey with red leather.

When was the last time you saw one of these rare 4 seater convertibles? Built by coachbuilders Thrupp and Maberly, they’re a rare sight these days.

They first appeared in the late 1940’s as the Sunbeam Talbot 90, and were available as both a 4 door saloon and as a handsome 2-door convertible, as we have here.

The Rootes Group simplified the marketing message for the last of the line 1955-57 Mark III, which are regarded as ‘best of breed’, by dropping the Talbot 90 part of the name, and simply called them Sunbeam Mark III.

This one is an early MKIII.

They may look a little staid by modern standards, but back in the mid 50’s they were quite a formidable rally weapon, campaigned by the likes of Stirling Moss, with a surprising turn of speed from the 2267cc engine and 4-speed manual gearbox

We’re told this underwent a body-off restoration in the late 1990’s, including a colour change from the original cream to the striking gunmetal in the pictures. The red leather interior is believed to be largely original, although the carpets have definitely been replaced.

The more I look at it, especially the art deco inspired detailing of the wing mirrors, door handles, etc, the more I like it. And the dash, with the large white steering wheel, is quite spectacular, although won’t win any awards for ergonomics.

It’s in nice condition as befits an older, mellowed restoration, starts on the button, and drives really well.

On our own website, you'll find our usual 2 videos – a walkaround appraisal, and driving impressions, which form part of the description. Please note – on the driving video the front passenger window is rattling badly. My fault – I didn’t line up the side windows properly after putting the hood up.
