Description

It was presented to the general public at the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show, in autumn, but a few months earlier, in the summer, it had already been previewed to the press at the Nardò (LE) circuit, where three pre-production models set significant speed records, travelling at an average of 247. 939 km/ h. The main attraction of the 190 E 2. 3-16 was its engine, whose block was derived from the standard production 2-litre unit; with rebored cylinders and a head reworked by the British company Cosworth, which included, among other things, a double overhead camshaft and four valves per cylinder, maximum power reached 185 hp at 6, 200 rpm, a remarkable value for an engine born in 1983. The top speed of the production car, launched just a year after the presentation in Frankfurt, was partially scaled down, reaching 230 km/ h, with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/ h in just 7. 5 seconds. In the 1988 edition of the DTM, the car took second place with driver Roland Asch and the following year it finished fourth with Kurt Thiim. The 190 E 2. 3-16 was also used for the inauguration of the new Nürburgring circuit, which took place in 1984. Here, several examples of this model battled it out in a race that saw a very young Ayrton Senna, who had only been racing in Formula 1 for a few months, triumph.
