Launched in Seville in November 1984 under the theme “progress makes the difference,” the Mercedes‑Benz E‑Class W124 quickly became a huge commercial success. It combines the build quality that has earned the marque its reputation with a level of driving pleasure and liveliness that was still unrivalled in Stuttgart saloons. From the taxi driver and his placid 200 D, to the busy entrepreneur cruising in a 300 E, a wide socio‑professional spectrum—as well as all enthusiasts of very good cars—appreciated their daily life aboard their E‑Class.
In 1986 the estates (S 124) joined the saloons, with the same range of engines, except for the 200 D which was marketed only in the German market.
In 1989 the first facelift of the E‑Class appeared, regarded by specialists as the best generation because it removed the early‑year teething problems, had not yet entered the era of economies of scale and recycled materials (mid‑1993), and benefited from a more flattering finish regardless of the version. This phase 2 is instantly recognisable by the colour‑matched side mouldings framed with a chrome trim that encircle the body. The door handles are also chrome‑finished. Inside, the precious wood is everywhere: still on the centre console but now also on the lower dashboard and the rear pockets.
Regarding the engines, some benefited from power increases, including the indestructible 2. 5‑litre five‑cylinder, whose output rose from 90 to 94 bhp.

Delivered new to Vichy on 29 May 1991, we possess the original order form from the first owner who kept it meticulously until 20 November 2024 at 87, 257 km. It is notable that this car, ordered on 9 March, was the third and last car of this very cautious driver: indeed he had already taken back his two previous cars at the time—a Peugeot 403 estate from 1959 and a 504 estate from 1977—for the sum of 10, 000 francs... Classic car enthusiasts (as we are) will appreciate... he bequeathed it to his neighbour upon his move into a retirement home on that date.
This model, astral silver/ black fabric, was a “Contact” version launched by the manufacturer at the start of the 1990s. The French importer wanted (in his great generosity?) to offer models at a more accessible entry price. These included the 190 D and 2. 5 D as well as the 250 D saloons and estates. Regarding the latter, for which the prospective buyer would still need to sign a cheque for 223, 354 francs at the time, it was to be removed: the two courteous illuminated mirrors, the removable front centre armrest, and the retractable boot cover… Who said petty?
Beyond these “marketing” considerations from another era, our model is absolutely EXCEPTIONAL. It presents in a condition that can be proudly compared to its May 1991 delivery. It shows no signs of wear; its time‑capsule condition indicates it has always been stored dry, without damp or sun exposure. All of the technical inspection reports (over thirty years) and the invoices confirm without a doubt its mileage. With a total of 91, 995 km, the engine and transmission services have been carried out. Needless to say, it runs like new, the automatic gearbox providing unmatched comfort and smoothness of ride.
