SUMMARY
In my opinion, the W211 was probably the last of the proper Mercedes, and still very much had that hewn from granite feel, something that has sadly disappeared from subsequent models. It’s also rare in that it was a significant improvement over its predecessors. When Mercedes launched the W211, it had to be good as they were at that point loosing ground to their great rivals BMW and Audi.
This W211 E-Class was supplied by Mercedes-Benz of Sheffield, it was their dealer demo for a couple of months to showcase the new last of the line “Executive SE” model. It was sold to a University Professor who has owned it up to September this year. He used the car sparingly, covering around 4000 miles pa, and had it maintained as required, by Mercedes for the first 10 years, then by independents thereafter. He kept all the invoices and supporting paperwork which has built into quite an impressive history file.
This is among is the last incarnation of the W211 E-Class, and is also a special edition “Executive SE” model. Being a late facelift car, it doesn’t suffer any of the well documented problems of the earlier (pre 2006) cars, the most significant of them being the SBC braking system; SBC was finally dropped from the W211 on the event of the post September 2006 (MY2007) and a more reliable system used. Also the event of that facelift saw build quality of the model significantly improve too, so these last of the line models are a real gem, with quality dare I say it similar to the legendary W124
Having already sold one of these W211 Executive Special Edition models this year, I’d been on the lookout for another. This one recently came up for sale and it actually ticked even more boxes than the last one I had. Like the last one, it was a low mileage, one owner car with impeccable provenance, however this is the ultra-reliable E220 with the legendary 170BHP OM646 (non DPF) engine and has the equally reliable 5G Automatic transmission; this is much less prone to issues than the 7G ‘box. In a facelift W211, this is akin to the "Golden Goose" of reliability, durability and longevity. As an example of what these are capable of, whilst on holiday in Portugal a few years ago, I road in a very similar spec W211 E220CDI taxi….. that had covered 828, 000 kms (* well over half a million miles) The driver told me it was on the same engine and transmission. He told me the car was used around the clock, driven by him during the day, and his brother drove it at night; the only time it stopped was Christmas Day and Easter Sunday. That shows just what these cars are capable of!
So if you’re looking for a proper Mercedes with that old school feel, but with modern refinements and features, a late model W211 is a very intelligent buy right now, and these last of the line models are the ones to go for. Most modern cars seem promise much but deliver little. In stark contrast, the W211 does exactly the opposite to that.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have.
