Description
1988 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit — 44, 000 Miles — RREC Concours Award Winner
Few motor cars convey quiet authority and traditional British craftsmanship quite like a late-production Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit. Introduced in 1980 as the spiritual successor to the legendary Silver Shadow, the Spirit marked a new era for the marque. Designed in-house under Austrian stylist Fritz Feller, its square-cut, dignified lines perfectly captured the timeless Rolls-Royce ethos of restrained elegance and commanding presence.
Beneath that imposing exterior lay considerable engineering advancement. While visually evolutionary, the Silver Spirit benefited from a significantly improved floorpan and chassis design, incorporating Girling automatic ride-height control and gas-charged shock absorbers. The result was a car of exceptional composure and ride quality, one capable of wafting its occupants in near silence while the legendary 6¾-litre Rolls-Royce V8 delivered effortless performance. With power steering, four-wheel disc braking and the marque’s obsessive attention to refinement, the Spirit offered the kind of serene driving experience that made Rolls-Royce the global benchmark for luxury motoring.
Production of the original Silver Spirit ran for less than a decade, from 1980 until 1989, during which time just 8, 129 examples were built. As the model matured it gained the hugely desirable Bosch fuel-injection system, replacing the earlier carburettor arrangement and delivering markedly improved reliability, drivability and efficiency. It is these later fuel-injected cars that are widely regarded as the most usable and sought-after examples today.
The car offered here represents an exceptional example of the breed and one that has already received recognition from the Rolls-Royce community itself. Finished in elegant Acrylic Silver Sand with delicate Walnut coachlines, it presents with an unmistakable presence that perfectly suits the Spirit’s stately proportions. The interior is trimmed in Cream Beige Connolly hide with dark brown piping, complemented by deep pile carpets, luxurious lambswool over-rugs and magnificent burr walnut veneers with boxwood inlays. Even the entertainment system is period perfect, with a Blaupunkt Bremen SQR46 radio cassette completing the car’s authentic specification.
Equally impressive is the car’s remarkable provenance and condition. Having covered just 44, 215 miles from new, this Silver Spirit has been cherished throughout its life, with four of its six keepers belonging to the same family. The accompanying documentation is exemplary. The original leather-bound Rolls-Royce handbook pack remains intact, including the service book containing 31 main dealer and specialist entries, together with the hardback owner’s manual and vehicle identification certificate. In addition, the car is accompanied by an extensive A4 leather-bound history portfolio containing service and maintenance invoices dating back many years, meticulously organised and illustrating the care this motor car has received.
Recent years have seen further sympathetic attention carried out by a highly respected Rolls-Royce specialist. Works include careful cosmetic detailing, underside preservation with Waxoyl, refurbished wheels and mechanical recommissioning including a new alternator, power steering rack, hydraulic accumulators, battery and tyres, ensuring the car remains mechanically exemplary.
Such diligence has not gone unnoticed. At the 2024 Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts’ Club Annual Rally, this Silver Spirit was awarded second place in the highly competitive Class 16 category, while its restorer received the Harry Ferguson Wood Trophy, a prestigious recognition within the Rolls-Royce community. These accolades speak volumes about the car’s outstanding presentation and authenticity.
Today the motor car presents in a condition that is genuinely difficult to fault. The paintwork retains a deep lustre, the chrome and brightwork are beautifully preserved and the interior appears almost showroom fresh, with the Connolly hide supple and richly patinated in the manner only Rolls-Royce leather can achieve.
On the road the experience is exactly as Crewe intended. The great V8 whispers into life and the car moves away with effortless smoothness, the ride serene and composed, isolating its occupants from the outside world in that uniquely Rolls-Royce manner.
With its low mileage, distinguished concours recognition, exceptional history file and outstanding condition, this Silver Spirit represents one of the finest examples available today. For the discerning enthusiast or collector seeking a truly special Rolls-Royce from the final years of the model’s production, this is a motor car that will be exceptionally difficult to surpass.
