SUMMARY
In a mad, mad world where old Ford Escorts are changing hands for £50, 000 to £100, 000 it makes no sense to me that a world beating car like this which cost upwards of £70K when new (the equivalent of £130, 000 in today’s money) can be bought for a very small fraction of the price of those old Fords, which were lets face it not very good in their day, and are certainly not great now. Conversely the W220 S-Class was, like every version of the S-Class before and after it, were and are the best car in the world at their respective time, and were a decade in front of anything else. Even by today’s standards, this is a very impressive car.
This wonderful S500 was supplied by Tony Purslow, Mercedes, Guildford to a lady from Farnham, who kept this car right up to June 2020. It was then bought by a well-known member of the Mercedes club who was famed for going through his cars with a fine-tooth comb and basically just did everything that needed doing, and more regardless of cost. I’ve listed everything that’s been done in the service history section, above. In November 2021 he sold the car to another club member, however in 2023 that club member was forced to sell the car due to health issues, so it was bought back by the original club member as he regretted selling it, given the work he’d done. Sadly in 2023 he fell into ill health too, so the car was sold to another club member, a model register captain who kept it for a further two years and further lavished much care and attention on it; I then acquired the car from him in January 2026.
This is quite a well-known car within the Mercedes club, and was a regular attendee at shows between 2021-2025, the condition of the car simply speaks for itself, you won’t find better, and you won’t find a better sorted example. When these cars are right, they’re are mind blowingly good, and surprisingly efficient too. I drove this car 90 miles home and it indicated an average 33mpg; at 70mph, that V8 is barely ticking over, so is barely breaking a sweat. I also think the shape of the W220 has aged very well, like all S-Class it has something of an understated elegance about it, but make no mistake, this is an iron fist in a velvet glove.
I could rattle on about this car for ages. My wish would be for the car to go to another enthusiast, as this is a rather special car. As a reference, I also have a W220 S320L that’s only covered 14K miles, and this S500 even puts that ultra-low mileage car to shame. You may find lower mileage examples, but I doubt you’ll find one as good, and you certainly won’t find another as well sorted as this one.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have.
