DESCRIPTION
Introduced in 1995, the Volvo S40 marked a new chapter for Volvo, offering a more compact and modern alternative to the larger 850 and 940 models. Built with Volvo’s trademark focus on safety, comfort and durability, the S40 quickly gained a reputation as a solid and dependable family saloon. The 1. 8 petrol model struck a good balance between economy and refinement, making it a popular choice for everyday driving.
Production of the first-generation S40 continued until 2004, when it was replaced by an all-new second-generation model. Today, well-preserved early examples are becoming increasingly rare, especially low-mileage cars that still retain their original character and understated Scandinavian charm
EXTERNAL
Presented in factory optional Volvo Haag Silver Metallic (Code 329), this car is nothing short of exceptional. Having spent its life cherished, the condition is immediately striking with beautifully straight bodywork and a deep, consistent shine front to rear
Closer inspection only reinforces how carefully this Volvo has been preserved. The paintwork is wonderfully clean, with no notable blemishes or imperfections to mention. Exterior trim, glass and rubber seals are all in outstanding order, and even the genuine Volvo headlamp protectors remain in place.
Preserved examples don't lose their original DNA, Thats why this superb example still retains it's supplying dealer number plates, rear window sticker and original tax disc holder. Simply described as showroom condition can sometimes be used to flippanyly.. Not in this case!!
INTERIOR
The cabin is every bit as impressive as the exterior. Front and rear seats Finished in Light Grey leather which would of been a Volvo optional extra, As you would expect from such a low mileage preserved example they present absolutely beautifully with barely any signs of wear. The seats are incredibly comfortable and retain the feel of a car that has seen only minimal use.
Door cards present excellent with no signs of being in the direct sunlight which can cause fading or shrinkage , while the headlining is spotless and fully intact. The carpets have been protected from new by tailored Volvo over mats, and the Red Woodline trim still looks rich and vibrant.
Everything functions exactly as intended, all switchgear presents original and in good working condition including the air conditioning and upgraded factory stereo system. The boot area is equally immaculate, complete with unused spare wheel and genuine unused Volvo toolkit beneath the floor.
Stepping inside genuinely feels like entering a late-1990s Volvo showroom.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Under the bonnet sits Volvo’s smooth and dependable 1. 8-litre 16-valve four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 115bhp and 165Nm of torque. Performance is delivered in a relaxed and refined manner, with 0–62mph achieved in 12. 0 seconds and a top speed of 118mph.
The engine bay presents beautifully and remains remarkably original, retaining its factory decals, plates and labels throughout, even down to those fitted to the underside of the bonnet. The level of preservation is exceptional and more in keeping with a concours display car than a vehicle approaching classic status.
Paired to the engine is a four-speed automatic transmission which performs effortlessly, offering smooth gear changes along with selectable economy, sport and winter driving modes.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Fitted to this stunning example factory optional 15-inch Spectra alloy wheels are presented in superb condition and have clearly been carefully maintained throughout the car’s life. Each wheel looks as though its just left the factory quite simply stunning condition considering the age, They are though consistent with such a meticulously preserved example. As expected from Volvo, safety and stability were a major focus in the engineering of the S40. Braking is provided by a four-wheel disc setup, with ventilated discs fitted to the front and solid to the rear. The system is supported by ABS and Electronic Brake Force Distribution, helping maintain control and balanced braking under heavier application or difficult road conditions.
HISTORY
First registered on 20th November 1998 by Lex Volvo Reading, this S40 was purchased new by Mrs McCawley, who remained the sole owner until a Mr Martin took over in 2025
Despite the exceptionally low mileage, the car has been serviced annually by the supplying Volvo dealership Waylands Volvo. Maintenance has been carried out religously every year regardless, this includes minor and major services as required within the Volvo schedule
