Having occupied itself with a variety of manufacturing and repair activities in the immediate aftermath of WW2, NSU returned to full-scale motorcycle production in 1948 with revived pre-war designs. Introduced in 1949, its first all-new product was the Albert Roder-designed Fox 4, which was powered by a 98cc overhead-valve single-cylinder engine and featured a pressed steel frame and Roder's patented leading-link fork. A couple of years later, essentially the same set of cycle parts was revamped for the Fox 2, a 123cc two-stroke, and both it and the original Fox 4 continued in production until superseded by the Superfox for 1955. Powered by a 123cc ohv engine, the Superfox looked very much like its larger Lux and Max brethren and was good for around 60mph flat-out. The Superfox and Lux were replaced by the 175cc Maxi in 1957.
This NSU Fox is presented in restored condition, currently displaying a total of 46, 317 kilometres (28, 781 miles) on the odometer (the engine turns over) The machine is offered with correspondence relating to the vendor's purchase in 1996, including a list of new parts used in the restoration: tyres, wheel rims and spokes; exhaust; battery; cables; taillight; wring harness; paintwork; chain; drive sprocket; rubbers; new motor bearings and gaskets.
Following a period of inactivity, this motorcycle will require recommissioning and/ or restoration to a greater or lesser extent before returning to the road and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's completeness, history, authenticity, originality and mechanical condition prior to bidding.
£2, 000 - 3, 000
All lots are sold ‘as is/ where is’ and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams Motorcycles website for all pertinent auction information.
