One of the greatest off-road motorcycles of its era, the Yamaha XT500 was produced from 1976 to 1989 and brought the Japanese marque a multitude of competition successes. Powered by a four-stroke, 499cc single, the XT500’s most enduring claim to fame was its victory in the inaugural Paris-Dakar Rally in 1979, which it repeated in 1980. The model had previously been successful in the Paris-Abidjan-Nice Rally and was also campaigned widely in motocross—no doubt sales were helped by Heikki Mikkola’s overall victories in 1977 and 1978 Motocross World Championships with a 500cc Yamaha.
Offered as part of a deceased estate, this Yamaha XT500 has been in long-term storage and is supplied without documentation. It is believed to be a circa 1977 model, however the exact year and registration status are unverified and will need to be confirmed by the buyer with the DVLA and relevant owners’ club. It displays the expected patina associated with extended storage, though it appears to have seen relatively little use. The odometer shows 4, 262 miles, which may well be genuine, although this cannot be warranted due to the absence of supporting documentation. The XT appears largely complete, although the clutch lever is broken. Some recommissioning will be required before use, but the engine turned over with compression at the time of consignment.
