Description
The Rickman Metisse Mk. III is one of Britain’s most iconic off-road and motocross machines. Originally developed by Don and Derek Rickman in the early 1960s, the Mk. III gained a reputation for its lightweight racing frame, exceptional handling, and compatibility with a wide range of British engines. The name Metisse—meaning “bastard” in French—captured this winning mix of the best components available. This Rickman Metisse was built by MRD, the company founded by Pat French, a dedicated Rickman enthusiast, who carried on the Metisse tradition in the 1980s by using the original Rickman parts, jigs and know-how. In doing so, MRD continued the legacy of the Rickman brothers by supplying frames and complete bikes, built to match the exact specifications of the earlier productions. Among its customers was Doug Desborough, the well-known 1960s motocross rider, who commissioned this example in the early 1980s. Finished in an elegant British Racing Green, with a satin-chrome frame and a Matchless G80CS Competition single-cylinder engine, the G80CS was originally supplied complete by Matchless—hence the SU marking on its number. Matchless also supplied bare engines to riders and enthusiasts who wanted to run their tried-and-tested Competition units on a special machine such as the Rickman Metisse. What’s more, an AMC gearbox and a Lucas Competition ignition ensure reliability and easy servicing. Out on the trails, the Metisse delivers exactly what made the name famous: sharp, responsive handling, bulletproof durability, and the confidence to tackle any terrain. A true adventurer, it blends classic British engineering with the legendary Rickman Metisse heritage. Feel free to get in touch for more information and photos.
