Description
The Vauxhall Astra Mk2 GTE occupies a significant place in the history of the great hot hatch era of the 1980s. Developed at a time when manufacturers were competing to produce lightweight, practical performance cars capable of genuine everyday usability, the 16-valve GTE represented the pinnacle of Vauxhall's engineering. Powered by the celebrated naturally aspirated 2. 0-litre 16-valve engine producing approximately 156bhp, it offered outstanding performance, sharp handling and impressive refinement, quickly establishing itself as one of the defining driver's cars of its generation. Today, original, low-mileage examples have become increasingly difficult to find, making surviving cars of this calibre highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike.
First registered in January 1989, this exceptional Mk2 Astra GTE has covered just 50, 000 miles from new and has had only four owners throughout its lifetime. It is understood that the first owner cherished the car for approximately 30 years, with the vehicle spending the period between 2007 and 2019 carefully stored in a garage before being sympathetically recommissioned. The result is a remarkably original example that has escaped the extensive restoration or modification often seen with surviving GTEs.
Finished in the iconic and ever-desirable White coachwork, the exterior perfectly complements the wonderfully preserved grey part vinyl and cloth interior, complete with the distinctive red Laserline seat inserts and matching red door pocket accents that have become synonymous with the model. Inside, the cabin presents exactly as a well-preserved GTE should, retaining its period charm with its striking digital instrument display, electrically operated windows and mirrors, Vauxhall cassette stereo, analogue clock, heater and ventilation controls, and manually operated sunroof. Sitting on its original style 14-inch alloy wheels, now fitted with recently installed Falken Sincera tyres, the car retains an authentic factory appearance throughout.
One of the most impressive aspects of this example is its originality. The seller confirms that the car still retains its original rear wheel arches together with its original date-stamped front wings, while all of the glass remains factory fitted. Mechanically, the Astra has benefited from careful maintenance throughout its life. In September 2023, at 48, 019 miles, it received a comprehensive service including fresh engine oil and filter, new air and fuel filters, together with replacement spark plugs. Following its long period of storage, recommissioning work was undertaken in June 2019, including replacement of the timing belt and water pump. Additional attention has included the fitting of new old stock tailgate struts, a replacement air inlet rubber and new carpet mats.
Increasingly recognised as one of the defining performance hatchbacks of the late 1980s, the Mk2 Astra GTE has earned its place among the most collectible modern classics of the era. Finding an example with such low ownership, exceptionally modest mileage, remarkable originality and documented history is becoming increasingly uncommon. Equally suited to concours events, classic car shows, spirited weekend drives or simply as an appreciating addition to any serious collection, this outstanding Astra GTE offers a rare opportunity to acquire one of Vauxhall's finest performance models in highly original and increasingly desirable condition.
