SUMMARY
Legendary (an often overused word, but not here!) W463 G-Wagen with the equally legendary OM603 Straight, Six diesel, which started off life a dealer Demo for Hills of Shrewsbury (now Mercedes-Benz of Shrewsbury) This is also a car I know well having sold it on a brokerage basis back in January 2020, acting as a” go between” between two good customers. The gentleman I sold this car for back in 2020 had spent a significant amount of money on it, including extensive engine work carried out, which was done by a G-Wagen specialist. He only owned the car just under a year but had to sell to recoup the money he’d spent on it.
The gentleman I sold it to, another repeat MTSV customer fulfilled his dream of owning a G-Wagen and has enjoyed it for the last six years, and covering just over 13, 000 miles, but has maintained it properly during his tenure. However, due to impending retirement which will bring with it the loss of storage as he’s in the removals and storage business, and together with a dwindling lack of use in the last couple of years, he’s reluctantly decided to sell this G-Wagen, along with a couple of other cars, so I bought it from him, and its back with me now.
I call G-Wagens of this era “Forth Bridge Cars” as you never really stop working on them, and this one is no exception. As with most early G-Wagens (before they became the choice bling transport of Footballers and Rappers) it’s not perfect and has a few marks and cosmetic imperfections you’d expect with this type of vehicle (think classic Land-Rover Defender) however more importantly the underside and chassis are superb and it’s also mechanically sound. The OM603 which powers this truck is an old school normally aspirated six-cylinder diesel; a G55 AMG this ain’t but what it lacks in performance it more than makes up for in character. I’ve always said these old school MB Diesels are so incredibly addictive, but even after all these years, I never really worked out why; all I can think is you feel very rewarded when you drive these cars, it’s like you’ve really achieved something! Also, although this one has only been run on Diesel in the time I’ve know it, these OM6XX series of engines have the added the bonus, should you wish, will happily run on SVO, Veg Oil, Kerosene/ Engine Mix, heating oil basically anything resembling oil so it’s a bit of an apocalypse car in that respect.
So, if you’re after one of these very sought after (proper) G-Wagens, and want a usable, presentable and well-maintained example, this is for you. I’ve had a few G-Wagens over the years, and I still can’t believe the attention these cars attract, they really have become a legend among vehicles. It’s well deserved though; I think they’re probably the best-off road vehicle money can buy (apart from Tanks or Specialist Military hardware etc.)
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have.
