George Mallory Hendee and Oscar Hedstrom founded the Indian Motorcycle Company in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1901. Indian advanced to become the world’s biggest motorcycle manufacturer during the second decade of the 20th century, famed for the outstanding quality and reliability of its machines. The engine layout as a 42° V-twin with side valve was typical. The best-known and highest-selling models are the 1920 Scout and the larger Chief, which was introduced two years later. The Great Depression forced Indian to reduce its production costs in 1929. The Scout 101 was too expensive to manufacture, and so was discontinued. From 1932, the Standard Scout was offered with its own engine in a larger Chief frame, but with the leaf spring suspension on the front fork that epitomised the bikes by Indian.
Locating a first-hand Indian in original condition is like finding the proverbial needle in a haystack. The consignor’s father ordered the Scout with all the trimmings from the Viennese general distribution agent for Indian motorcycles, Max Stepski, Seilerstätte 6, in 1936. So the Indian left its wigwam in Springfield equipped with lights, horn, speedometer (km/ h), magnetic ignition, chrome-plated handlebars and another special feature: a four-speed gearbox! The four-gear version was actually not included as an optional extra until 1937. The original order and many other period documents are preserved as impressive testimonies to the Scout’s history. It was almost confiscated twice, once by the Nazis and again by the occupying forces. But on both occasions it was hidden too well. Today, the Scout is in absolutely original condition, even the paint job, excepting only the tyres, the chain and the battery. All of the accessories are preserved, and the bike even comes with a floating passenger seat. An Indian will run forever! Nonetheless, the consignor submitted the motorcycle for technical inspection and overhaul. So the engine was sealed, the valve seats and guides refurbished, the magneto rewound and the clutch serviced. You will not find a more honest Indian. It bears its traces of battles and age with pride, inspiring confidence in its indefatigable resilience.
