Named after the famous WWII aircraft, the Whitley was a luxuriously equipped, semi-razor edged saloon powered by an 18 hp, 2. 3 litre 6 cylinder engine.
When released, the Whitley competed with the other saloon available at that time from Armstrong Siddeley, the Lancaster. However these were very different cars despite being mechanically identical. The Whitley had a much larger boot albeit at the expense of cabin space, and was a sportier looking vehicle.
The car was offered with manual or pre-selective transmission. Armstrong Siddeley’s policy was one of continual improvement and many changes were implemented during the Whitley’s four year life. However only 2, 500 were built by this unique British car manufacturer between 1949 and 1953.
This lovely and extremely rare old beast is really incredibly clean and tidy. I would describe her as being very much an original car, never restored and very sound in everyway. Her chassis, floor pans, engine bay and boot are sound and weld free. Her leather and wood interior is also in tip top condition. She drives beautifully with her straight-six engine and is a 4-speed manual on the floor as opposed to the pre-select. Everything works as it should even down to the heater. Recently fully serviced including new oil and filter, brakes, fuel pump etc.

All my classic cars are treated as the equivalent of motoring antiques. This one, for example, is 65 years old. They cannot be compared to the wife's six-month-old Chelsea tractor and they are bound to come with imperfections, quirks and bits and pieces that will need attention even if it is some time in the future. They do however come with oodles of charm, appeal and are there to be loved like a family pet. If you are new to the classic car scene, then please bear all this in mind.
