Straight from the 1968 launch of Sir William Lyons’s final masterpiece, it was recognised as the best car in the world.
Forty years on and arguably the XJ6 was the last true world-beating saloon to roll out of Browns Lane. When it finally surfaced in 1968 it broke the mould for prestige saloons, not just matching its class peers but redefining the sector altogether – a feat even the latest all aluminum XJ and the excellent XF have failed to copy.
Using special low profile Dunlop radials, you can even argue that the XJ6 was the last true ‘all new’ model from Jaguar - if you overlook the fact that the well evolved XK engine was by then 20 years old, and the suspension set-up had been refined through its bulky predecessor, the Mk X/ 420G. That’s stuff to debate down the pub… what isn’t in question is that the XJ is still an amazingly modern and competent luxury sports saloon that – when compared to Mk1/ Mk2s–represents astonishing value for money. Just like it did back in 1968!

Fact remains that these Jaguars were noted for their grace, pace and space and there is a reason why Jaguar has stuck with the XJ nomenclature for its finest saloon 40 years on: rarely can a car have been so ahead of its class as the XJ was with the Series I. And for those still beguiled by the cat, it is satisfying to see moderns once more worthy of the Jaguar XJ badge.
For years they were bought by retired gents who had them when new. Now they are gaining a real following among younger buyers and just as recent XJ’s have revived, so has interest in early cars.
They are the perfect classic: characterful yet civilised to drive. No doubt – the Series 1 is the purist’s choice.
