Wolseley 6/ 80 – Chauffeur Driven/ Royal Connections
After the war Wolseley moved from their Adderley Park factory to Cowley where production of the new 6/ 80 commenced in 1948. Externally the car was similar to the Morris M0 but under the extended bonnet/ chrome radiator grill was the superb Wolseley six cylinder overhead camshaft engine that utilised knowledge gained from aero engine production. The car was exceptionally quick, well balanced with excellent road holding and superior comfort. The 6/ 80 quickly became the police car of choice and was used by many forces until the late 1960's
Originally supplied by G & A Thomson Motors of Cults on 17th October 1953 our car was purchased by the Baroness Fermoy DCVO, OBE as a Golden Wedding Anniversary present to her parents Colonel W. S and Mrs Ruth Gill. The Baroness was a personal friend and confident of the Royal family and held the position “Women of the Bedchamber” to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Indeed, the two ladies were said to have arranged to bring their grandchildren together – The Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer.
Today the 6/ 80 is a remarkable car with stunning paint, excellent chrome and superior original green leather/ wood interior. On the road the car drives as good as it looks with smooth acceleration, easy column gear change and whisper quiet tick over.
The history folder contains press cuttings, original buff log-book, driver instruction manual and on the rear shelf is the chauffeur’s hat used by The Baroness’s driver, Mr Duff Nicholson.
A car in this condition with royal connections would grace any car show and we would recommend early viewing in order to fully appreciate this lovely 6/ 80
