1929 Austin 7 Arrow 2 Seater
The 'Arrow' model was the design of a Mr G F Simmonds, who was Secretary of
Cambridge University Automobile Club and required a small car with sporting
lines that was different and distinctive from production models.
Based on the standard Austin Seven chassis, this new car was built by A P
Crompton Ltd of Merton, London. When completed the final product was to such
a high standard that it took second place in the 1929 Brighton Motor Rally
Concours d'elegance.
By later in 1929, production was under way, as the first car had attracted
considerable interest. Earliest models were fabric bodied, but this gave way to steel panelled construction, covered in 'Fabrikloid' and now the spare wheel was externally mounted on the tail instead of the very early fitment inside the luggage area. Completed cars were distributed by Normand Garages Limited and a four seater body became available.
Arrow coachwork of various designs was also available on other light cars of
the period, including the Morris Minor, Standard 9 and Wolseley Hornet.
This example dates from 1929 and was registered in January the following
year. It was the subject of an exacting restoration during the 1990s by a
long term owner and is believed to be the earliest survivor and the only one
with the internally fitted spare wheel.
Extensive documentation covers the complete chassis up rebuild to the exact
original design. Smartly finished in dark green and cream, the car has green
leather interior trim and full weather equipment.
A rare and particularly charming version of the much loved Austin Seven, it
is certain to create considerable interest wherever it is seen.
