It wasn’t an obvious next step for a French World War II fighter ace, but it was a clever one. Count Roland de la Poype saw the Mini Moke, decided he could make it better, and the result was the Citroen Mehari. Built using innovative ABS plastic rather than more common fibreglass, the Mehari found 145,000 buyers over its loong 18 year run.
Much like Fiat’s Jolly, the Mehari was conceived as a beach car or utility car, and focuses on simplicity. The running gear is largely derived from the 2CV and Dyane, including the 602cc two cylinder ‘Boxer’ engine, which means these cars are easy to work on.
This 1979 example is one of the best we have seen in a long while. Evidently restored to a high standard and finished in mid-blue with white trim, it is a really impressive car that has been nicely detailed with a tan interior.
Alongside the photos, further reassurance is provided by ASI certification and a lengthy Revisione valid to June 2027. This is a collector-quality example of the hugely characterful Citroen.image.png1.45 MB
