The Appeal
By the 1970s, Japanese marques were really beginning to get their footing internationally, and the innovative, comparatively insular world of Toyota was rapidly gaining prominence. There were plenty of Japanese cars that were still identifiable, and for many, the Celica was a tonic. The Ford Mustang was growing bigger, bulkier and let's face it, less cool every generation - while the Celica was still nimble and lightweight.
The Celica's long-nosed, sleek silhouette was more affordable, too, and offered plenty of spirited performance. It may not have quite been a muscle car, but for those seeking pure style on their driveway, it was a simply superb prospect. Needless to say, many of these impressive liftbacks began travelling west.
This 2.0-litre GT specific example stands out for its remarkable provenance and condition, having been purchased new in Japan by a UK resident in 1975 who subsequently imported it to Britain in 1979. The history, original spec and comprehensive documentation makes for a rare and highly desirable opportunity.
As the images illustrate, this car has been fully restored to a very high standard. The restoration was carried some years ago prior to the current ownership. The current owner employed Bob Clarke (Aka Celica Bob) to go through the car from top to bottom so the car is now faultless both mechanically and cosmetically.
