1966 Ford Mustang Convertible

Highlights

  • Comprehensively restored in its native America
  • In the UK since 2018
  • Regularly maintained

The Appeal

The iconic Mustang might be best known for smoking around the streets of San Francisco in the hands of an ice-cool Steve McQueen. But since its inception, there’s been a more relaxed side to the model in the form of the convertible. Boasting the same styling as its sportier sibling, the roofless version of America’s favourite pony car brings much of the stylistic appeal of the coupe to top down motoring experience.

This example, in eye-catching Springtime Yellow, is a real head turner and, according to its owner, generates a positive reaction wherever it goes, both in its home nation and over here in the UK.
It was bought in a freshly restored state by the seller in 2011 in the USA and he brought it over in 2018 to spend more time with it. However,  it’s still not seen enough use to justify its place on his fleet and so it’s your opportunity to own this fabulous slice of sixties Americana. Little used of late but still regularly serviced, it remains in just-restored condition and is ready to be enjoyed by the winning bidder. So if you want to make the sunny weather more memorable then get bidding now!

The History and Paperwork

  • Purchased 2011 from Southern Bell Classic Cars in South Carolina, USA
  • Had been the subject of a full restoration including a new hood
  • Exported by the owner to the UK in 2018
  • All import documentation present and correct
  • Serviced annually since arriving in the UK by trusted local Morgan specialist. Invoices present
  • Reluctant sale due to lack of opportunity to use it
  • MOT exempt
  • V5 present in the owner’s name

The Interior

  • Black upholstery in very good condition
  • Everything works, including the radio/ cassette player
  • Uprated speakers behind the original trim
  • Original sticker on the boot lid showing the jacking points
It’s unknown if the interior of this Mustang is original but, if not, then it’s certainly very well preserved. Finished in black, there is a little weathering but overall it presents very well and the chromed detailing is a treat. There are no marks, scuffs or blemishes of note and everything works as it should, including the radio which includes a working (and still used) cassette player which drives a set of uprated speakers behind the original grilles. The owner notes that it’s still no Bang and Olufsen but it is an improvement on the original set up.
The only issue of note is that the manual window winders are a little stiff but that sounds like a fun job for a sunny day rather than a major impediment. Back in the ‘trunk’, there’s a snazzy matching liner and spare wheel cover set in a checked material but the boot area itself is clean and solid and the original jack is present.

The Exterior

  • Finished in Springtime Yellow
  • Unmarked wheels and white striped tyres
  • Hood renewed 2010
Although restored in 2011, the car has always been garaged and stored under a soft, branded bespoke car cover (which is included in the sale) and over the last few years, the car has seen very little use, only coming out for a few weekends a year in the summer. While that’s a shame in some ways, it does mean that the paintwork, chrome and lights have remained in pristine condition. Its status as a high days and holidays car only means that there are no dents or significant stone chips either and it will surely delight its new owner.
The wheels are unmarked and wear a set of tyres with good tread all round while underneath and, although some welding was required back in 2019 to get it through an MOT, the garage which has serviced it since its arrival in the UK has noted no further problems. The new hood seems to have been a little better suited to warmer climes as it’s a little stiff in the colder UK weather and the owner reports that it can take two average middle-aged people to get it back in place (but that it can be raised single-handedly by a suitably muscle-bound youngster.)

The Mechanics

  • Original straight six engine
  • Automatic gearbox
  • Starts and runs well
Under the ‘hood’ the engine bay is in very original condition and, with the benefit having always been kept on a trickle charger, the motor always starts first time. In the garage in which it is stored, there is a drip tray installed underneath which shows a little seepage but nothing to be concerned about, according to the mechanic who looks after it.
On the road it is, the seller admits, a little noisy relative to more modern machinery but it’s all the right noises with no untoward knocks or bangs. When selecting Drive from Neutral, it can take a press of the accelerator pedal to get it to fully engage but this has never caused a problem.
Performance from the straight six engine is not quite in the league of the V8 versions of the Mustang but it pulls well and happily cruises at 60-65 mph. The one area that does date the car in the opinion of its owner is the brakes. They pull the car up in a straight line but can require some mental adjustment when you jump in after driving a newer car. But in truth this is not a car to go chasing lap times in anyway. Bestowed with a level of body roll in the name of ride comfort, it’s best enjoyed at a more sedate pace and, in the owner’s opinion, there are few finer ways to spend a sunny day.

Summary

A delightful example of the iconic sixties convertible that will surely make its next owner very proud, and quite possibly some new friends too.

Ammontare dell'offerta Incremento
Da £0 a £9,999 £100.00
Da £10,000 a £49,999 £250.00
Da £50,000 a £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Superamento immediato dell'offerta
