The Appeal

There are few true icons in the car world, but the 1967/68 Mustang Fastback is definitely one of them.

With its sweeping curves, brutal performance and starring role in ‘that’ film (we’re not going to mention it), it’s become a legend of the car scene.
Here we have something truly special - probably a true one of a kind. A 1967 Fastback that had a single owner from new to 2009, has done less than 7,000 miles and has been restored to a very high standard.

It’s a fantastic story, and an exceptional machine…

The History and Paperwork

  • Manufactured on 21st February 1967
  • First registered on 6th June 1967
  • Californian car
  • Bought new by an elderly gent who drove it until 1973 when his licence was revoked
  • The car remained unused on the driveway in California for the next 36 years until the owner died
  • Purchased by the current owner (who was working in Los Angeles) as a non-runner from San Diego Classic & Muscle Cars in January 2009 – at the time it had just 6,282 miles on the clock
  • Recommissioned with some additional enhancements and a full respray by M2 Automotive in Los Angeles
  • Used daily in Los Angeles for a short while
  • Brought back to the UK and dry stored until March 2020 when the rebuild began
  • Rebuild was completed in July 2022
  • Never used on the road in the UK (tested on private land post restoration)
  • Never shown or magazine featured - completely new to the UK's American car scene
  • Original build sheet included
  • Marti report (VIN decoder)
  • DVLA numberplate authorisation certificate
  • V5C in vendor’s name
  • Only selling for health reasons

The Interior

  • Original factory option GT bucket seats and ‘Sport Deck’ rear seats
  • Original trim and headlining
  • Dash-mounted race tachometer
  • Aftermarket Hurst gear-shifter
With this car having been used so little, it’s perhaps little wonder that the interior is so well preserved.

Naturally, there are some very minor signs of wear, purely from the passing of time. But the fact that this still wears the same vinyl upholstery and headlining that it left the factory with is incredible.
Those factory option GT buckets and ‘Sport Deck’ rear seats look very smart and all come with period-correct lap belts. All of the fabrics present very well, from the vinyl to the black carpets and headlining. There’s no notable damage or significant wear to mention.

Likewise, the internal trim is all present and correct, other than the chrome strips which usually adorn the door cards and the handle inserts.
A period radio/cassette is present and correct, and the vendor tells us that it works but is not connected. All of the other gauges, controls and instruments are presented in very fine condition and work just as they should.

We’re told by the vendor that the dash-mounted race tachometer can easily be hidden if so desired.

The Exterior

  • Candy Apple Red paintwork
  • Wimbledon White ‘Monte Carlo’ stripes
  • Resprayed by M2 Automotive in 2009
  • In dry storage since 2009
  • Genuine American Racing ‘Torq Thrust’ alloys
Striking in its coat of Candy Apple Red with full ‘Monte Carlo’ stripe kit, this Fastback presents very well indeed.

The paint is in excellent condition, the car having been in dry storage since 2009 and never having been exposed to rain in the UK.
Naturally, time and the Californian sunshine have left a handful of marks on the paintwork. The front valance/chin spoiler wears a handful of minor scuffs and some light paint crazing, there are three tiny bubbles in the paint at the lower leading edge of the driver’s door and some hairline cracking around the door locks. Otherwise, the paint looks to be in fine fettle.
Similarly, the bodywork itself is clean, straight and undamaged. We could see no evidence of corrosion, dents or damage. The vast majority of the external trim, brightwork and badging also appears to be original and wears a lovely light patina, yet has lost none of its lustre.

Other than a couple of minor dimples in the front chrome strip of the bonnet, it all looks to be undamaged and straight. Even the enamelled petrol cap, usually something that suffers from wear and tear, looks to be in excellent condition.

One change that has been made is that the original telescopic aerial has been removed as, over time, the action of these can damage the wing.
The light lenses front and back look in fine order, with no chips or cracks evident. Also, we’re told that all of the glass, including the blue ‘sun strip’ in the windscreen, is original.
Originally the car shipped on shaped steel wheels. These have been upgraded to genuine 15” American Racing ‘Torq Thrust’ alloy wheels. With grey centres and polished lips and barrels, they certainly look the part and set the car off beautifully. They’re wrapped in new Cooper Cobra tyres, chunky 215/65 items at the front and monstrous 295/50s at the rear.
Underneath, the car is as close to pristine as you’ll see. There’s absolutely no evidence of corrosion or damage we could see, the vendor having restored and refreshed everything to a very fine standard.

The Mechanics

  • 4.9-litre (297 cu in) 4-barrel small block V8
  • Hurst 4-speed manual transmission
  • Factory option power disc brakes
  • Comprehensively rebuilt and restored drivetrain
When the car was initially recommissioned in Los Angeles, a chrome chassis and engine bay stiffening kit was added, along with a curved Monte Carlo bar.

This was accompanied by a Level 2 Drag Racing suspension kit, HSLA steel K-members, twin-tube pro-coilovers and a shaker hood air intake.
When the decision was made to rebuild the car in March 2020, the engine was fully stripped and, other than the block, the vendor tells us that everything was replaced new for old. This included:
  • An uprated oil pump
  • New bearings
  • Displacement increased to 297 cu in
  • Micro-polished crankshaft and new camshaft bearings
  • Forged H-beam rods and forged pistons
  • Head ported and tempered for unleaded fuel
  • Holley 4-barrel ‘Street Warrior’ carburettor
  • Offenhauser intake and headers
  • Flowmax exhaust
  • MSD Race electronic ignition
The amount of work that has been undertaken is clear when you look under the bonnet - it’s an incredibly clean and tidy engine bay. But the work didn’t stop there, as the rest of the drivetrain has been given the same level of attention.
Both axles and the rear differential were sent to McLeod Racing to be refreshed and rebuilt. A number of other elements were refreshed or replaced too, including:
  • Hurst 4-speed Toploader manual transmission
  • Aerostar propshaft
  • New Ford Performance differential
  • New hardened steel driveshafts
  • New adjustable Airshock rear springs
  • Front power disc brakes refurbished and rebuilt with stainless steel hoses
  • New master cylinder, calliper pistons, pads and brake lines

Summary

We’ve quite simply never seen a Fastback Mustang presented with such low, original mileage. With the enormous amount of time, money and effort that has been poured into restoring this car, it must be one of the best on the road in Europe, if not the world.
If you’ve always lusted after an early V8 Mustang, and who hasn’t, then this has to be on your radar.

Besides being largely original inside and out, the drivetrain has been carefully and sympathetically upgraded and enhanced to make it as reliable and potent as possible, while maintaining drivability.
Whatever the new owner decides to do with this vehicle, we’re certain of one thing – it’s going to be an awful lot of fun.
There, we’ve managed to go all the way to the end without mentioning “Bullitt” once.

Oh. Damn it.

Ammontare dell'offerta Incremento
Da £0 a £9,999 £100.00
Da £10,000 a £49,999 £250.00
Da £50,000 a £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Superamento immediato dell'offerta
