Introduced in 1947, the HY or H Van is Citroëns popular and charming panel van which was in production over a 34 year period. Adopting design and engineering features from Citroëns other innovative piece, the Traction Avant, these vans featured a unitary body, so no separate chassis, independent suspension and front wheel drive. Its unique corrugated bodywork was inspired by German aircraft, where the metalwork was ribbed and as such making it strong without adding weight, also meaning it could be produced with simple low cost machinery. 

A total of 473,289 of these post war, distinctive vehicles were produced in various bodies and numerous configurations which have since become a very sought after vehicle for the street food and drink vendor.

Like most HY vans, this vehicle started its life on the continent, France to be exact, where it was used as a service vehicle for the ‘’service départemental d'incendie et de secours’’ - the French Department of Fire and Rescue Service. It was imported to the United Kingdom in 1993 and in Worth, Kent for a short period before being registered to a London address from 1994. The vehicle was taken off the road and kept stored in a barn from 2005 up until the current keeper took over ownership in 2019.

It was purchased with the ambition of being restored and converted to a workable catering truck, however the business requirements have now changed and the requirement for the vehicle is no longer present.

Included with the vehicle you will receive; 

Hand painted in a light blue, with white roof, the van is far from perfection but is in a usable, functional condition. The restoration included welding and some patch repairs of the metal, mainly underneath, the main body has some bruises, scars but the fresh light blue paint has its best to give it a somewhat pleasant appearance.

Openable side hatch complete with chalk boards, rear barn doors and a side sliding door mean access to the vehicle is available from all sides, ideal for those function type purposes. The HY is a charming van, they’re very likeable and a perfect tool to attract customers at those outside events such as festivals or functions such as weddings.

Inside the front cab, it's basic but it was designed as a utilitarian vehicle so no surprises there. Brown vinyl seats are combined with a white paint, which covers most of the inside including the internal engine cover located between the front seats.

The simple colour scheme continues through to the work or cargo section, where the floor has been lowered to increase head room and shelves installed with the ambition of assisting when the van is out at events. A wood trim has been installed to the roof and openable side hatch keeping with the simplistic design. Overall it’s usable, but could be refined and perfected to suit the needs of any potential owner or business.

The vehicle was manoeuvred a couple times during our visit, and it runs and ticks over gently. One thing we were made aware of is that the heater blower is not connected.

These vans are the ideal choice for most function caterers, or businesses that want to attract a crowd or converted into quirky campers. They’re loved by all and act as a people magnet wherever they go. This truck is good and tidy enough to be used straight away with nice modifications to the rear such as the lowered floor and side hatch allowing for you to comfortably and efficiently work in the back. 

For the perfectionist the vehicle is a good base for perfection to be obtained, either way it's a wonderful opportunity to own a wonderfully charming van.
