1972 Porsche 911T Targa

Highlights

  • Desirable right-hand drive ‘Oil Flap’ model equipped with a versatile Targa roof
  • Fully rebuilt 2.4-litre flat-six engine and Zenith carburettors
  • Once the last few jobs are completed, this will be a fabulous restored example

The Appeal

Known amongst enthusiasts as the ‘Oil Klapper’ or ‘Oil Flap’ model, the dry-sumped 1972 911s are considered highly collectible for their curious external oil filler hidden under what looked like a second fuel cap.
This 911T Targa is almost across the finish line of an extensive restoration and just needs a few things to be sorted out before it heads back out onto the road. The bodywork has been fully restored with fabrication and repainting carried out to a high standard. That rather special 2.4-litre flat-six has also been rebuilt and now needs wiring in so that it can be started for the first time.
If, like us, you’ve always lusted after one of these sought-after 911Ts, then getting this lovely example back on the road is a great opportunity to fulfil that dream.

The History and Paperwork

  • Right-hand drive
  • V5C present
  • MOT and road tax exempt due to its age
  • Accompanied by a selection of invoices for parts acquired during the restoration
  • We’re informed it was acquired by the vendor from Ireland around eight years ago
  • Repainted three months ago by Amazing Autos and stored ever since
  • The restoration is mostly complete, it just needs finishing

The Interior

  • Right-hand drive
  • Appears to be mostly complete
  • Very good overall condition
It’s on the inside where most of the remaining work needs to be carried out. So far as we could discern, the interior is mostly complete and in good overall condition.
As you would expect, the front seats exhibit the most wear but this is still by no means excessive. Finished in part velour, part vinyl, they have a great ‘70s look and feel. Besides a little patination and general wear in places, they appear to be very serviceable and we reckon they’ll clean up really nicely. The rear occasional seats display few signs of use and so are in great shape.
We couldn’t see any cracks or damage to the top of the dashboard and that iconic array of five dials all appear in fine condition. The vendor informs us that all the switchgear accompanies the car and will require wiring in. The steering wheel exhibits some light signs of use but looks eminently serviceable. There is currently no gear knob fitted.
With regards to the remaining upholstery, only one door card is currently in place although it does not appear to have been fitted properly yet. The black carpeting and overmats look smart.
Overall, this interior has great potential and with a little work, it is sure to look wonderful.

The Exterior

  • Blau (Blue) Metallic 324 paintwork
  • New genuine Porsche lights and rubber seals
  • Restored bodywork with fabrication and repainting carried out to a high standard
Resplendent in a coat of Porsche Blau Metallic 324, this 911T really looks the part and is sure to be the centre of attention at many future car shows.
Amazing Autos in LLanelli carried out the paintwork about three months ago and it has clearly been completed to a very high standard. Unfortunately, the off-side wing was a small scratch that was caused during reassembly and so the vendor is supplying a litre of matching paint so that this can be rectified. Otherwise, the paint finish is really fine and since the car hasn’t been driven, there are no stone chips to be seen.
All of the necessary fabrication and welding work was carried out to the body and floors which have also been refinished in body colour. A glance underneath and you can see the quality of the work which is very good indeed and there is no corrosion anywhere to be seen either.
We’re informed that all the lights and seals were replaced with new genuine Porsche items. All the brightwork looks to be in great condition as well. The reconditioned Fuchs alloys, as ever, look fantastic and the new Goodyear tyres appear in good order.
We understand the Targa roof fits well and is a great feature when the sun comes out.

The Mechanics

  • Dry sump 2.4-litre, carburetted flat-six
  • Rebuilt engine and carburettors
  • The gearbox, suspension and brakes have been refurbished
  • Not yet started since rebuild
  • Brand new Kroon wiring loom

For a time, Porsche equipped the 911T with an external oil filler as access to the tank was quite challenging under the engine hatch. Unsurprisingly, this feature proved troublesome as customers would repeatedly forget the Porsche’s fuel tank was located at the front of the vehicle, prompting them to pump petrol directly into the engine!

Fortunately, this 911T survived unscathed although the next owner should of course be aware of how easy a mistake this is to make. The external oil filler was soon abandoned, making these 1972 cars very collectable.

The vendor informs us that the 2.4-litre flat-six along with its carburettors has been rebuilt but not yet started as the wiring loom has not been connected. A new Kroon wiring loom has been sourced and now just needs to be connected up.

The gearbox has been reconditioned and we’re informed that the suspension and brakes have been overhauled.

Once everything is wired in and set up, we understand that this car is mechanically in very fine fettle so should be ready to hit the road once the last few jobs have been attended to.

Summary

This is amongst the most highly prized ‘70s 911s and we’re sure numerous collectors will be very keen to get their hands on it.

With all of the big restoration jobs done, this project is tantalisingly close to completion and we can’t wait to see the finished product.

Ammontare dell'offerta Incremento
Da £0 a £9,999 £100.00
Da £10,000 a £49,999 £250.00
Da £50,000 a £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Superamento immediato dell'offerta
