The Appeal

The Ducati 24 Horas model was produced from 1966 to 1974, with examples produced under licence by MotoTrans in Spain from 1960 onwards.  It was conceived to celebrate Ducati’s victories in the gruelling annual 24 hour race at Montjuic street circuit, nr Barcelona which they won in 1957-8, 1960, 1962 and 1964. Approximately 2000 were sold over the eight year production run, of which about 230 were imported into the UK by Vic Camp, and this example is thought to be one of those.
It has an interesting history as in about 1974 it was purchased by David Riddell who was the Solicitor for Comerfords Motorcycles of Thames Ditton.  He rode it for several years before offering it to ex Comerfords Sales Director Bert Thorn around 2000.  By then it had been in storage for several years and although it had been well preserved, a full restoration was required.  This was carried out by Bert Thorn and Roger Davy, with the engine being rebuilt by Lacey Engineering of Portland, with an invoice on file for £1,242.

The bike was repainted to as new appearance, and all the brightwork was re-chromed including the wheels.  These were rebuilt by Jock Wilson who was also ex-Comerfords.
The Ducati was purchased by Roger Davy and displayed in his snooker room for several years before being bought by a well known collector to become part of his collection.  Subsequently the entire collection was purchased by the Seller in 2020 who has now decided to offer motorcycles for sale individually.  He hopes they will be purchased by enthusiasts who will appreciate their historic importance.
This rare and beautiful Ducati is in near perfect condition, although it hasn’t been started or ridden for some time.

  • Clean frame with no obvious damage
The Ducati remains in freshly restored condition with no damage or areas needing immediate attention.

The Mechanics

  • SOHC bevel drive single cylinder “wide case” 247cc engine
  • 5 speed gearbox
  • Correct Amal concentric carburettor
  • Mechanically restored to as new condition in 2000
  • Has not been started for some time so light re-commissioning may be required prior to use
On the day we visited we did not attempt to start the Ducati, although the Seller assures us that with a little tinkering it would run well.

We are not sure when it was last started as for several years it has been either carefully stored, or exhibited, but he assures us that mechanically it is in great shape.

Summary

It is always a pleasure to offer a motorcycle as attractive as this Ducati, and it is unusual for any bike to have such a well documented history.

It’s no surprise that it has spent the last 23 years since its restoration indoors on display as it is an extraordinarily beautiful object, and would be the ”jewel in the crown” of any Ducati collection. We don’t think this one will have any difficulty finding a new home!
