The Appeal
The 996 – the first of the water-cooled 911s – offers probably the purest form of the car for petrolheads. It is the lightest and has the least electronic trickery-cum-assistance. It even still has a cable-connected accelerator – analogue or what?
Its 3.4-litre flat-six (still worth it just for the sound) pushes out a respectable 300bhp, giving a 0-60mph time of 4.5 seconds and a top speed of nearly 180mph. And its handling mixes old-school poise with modern flexibility. And they’re still not a lot of money.

The Interior

- Full grey leather interior in very good overall condition
- Leather door panels with carpeted bottoms very tidy
- Sony Bluetooth hifi with multi-changer CD player
- All switches and instruments reportedly work
- Good carpets, and taut Alcantara headlining
- Steering wheel very tidy, though some wear to gear knob/handbrake
- Interior could do with valeting/detailing
The Exterior
- Deep blue metallic paint with Porsche logos on lower body
- Steel sunroof
- Very few imperfections, with the only discernible blemishes being superficial
- Narrow panel gaps and even shut lines
- Black window frames retain good finish, no corrosion visible beneath
- Smart ‘Porsche Cup’ wheels show no corrosion, and yellow brake callipers are tidy

Summary
It takes about 20 years for Porsche enthusiasts to forgive any model for not being exactly like the one before it, and now 996s are starting to come in from the cold. Their values are firming up and many people are beginning to see them as a starter classic.
Mechanically sound and well-fettled, this no-nonsense 2001 example should appeal to just such a buyer.
