The fifth generation of VW’s evergreen Golf came along at the end of 2004 and marked a major step forward for the model, bringing in an entirely new platform and far sharper handling and steering than its predecessor.
Like all Golfs, the Mk 5 enjoyed a period as Britain’s most desirable second-hand car, and while that mantle has now been passed down to the Golf Mk 7 and Mk 8, the Mk 5 still remains sought-after, especially in excellent condition.
You’ll struggle to find better than this one, too. It has covered a genuine 29,000 miles from new and is in practically flawless condition, having had just two owners from new and having covered a minimal mileage in the past few years.
The Golf is being offered for sale by a classic car enthusiast who bought it when it was about four years old for his mother-in-law.
Sadly, the owner passed away in November 2021 and the car has been in the care of the family since.
It had stood since June 2021, so the vendor had it recommissioned by his local trusted garage before offering it for sale, requesting a major service and a new MOT, the receipt for which is in the paperwork file.
It was purchased from Robinson’s VW in Lowestoft, Suffolk, and comes with its original book pack and handbooks along with a duplicate service history book detailing its maintenance.
As you’d expect from a car with less than 30,000 miles on the clock, the cabin of the Golf is in excellent order with no discernible signs of wear, just a few very light scuffs to the interior plastics and a bit of ingrained dirt in the boot floor from where the previous keeper used to transport plants.
All of the dials and controls work as they should and all warning lights extinguish when you switch on the engine.
The Golf is in great condition with no signs of corrosion or any panel damage, the only very minor issues being a couple of very small scratches on the rear bumper and one headlamp that has gone ever-so slightly cloudy around the edges.
Otherwise, it’s superb, with unmarked alloy wheels and all trim present and correct.
VW’s FSI engine, which stands for Stratified Fuel Injection, was introduced when the Mk 5 first appeared and is electronically controlled to increase fuel pressure under acceleration but reduce it when load is reduced for extra economy. It makes the petrol-powered Golf an economical cruiser.
This one is in good running condition having been well-maintained and is described by the vendor as flawless to drive, with good brakes and steering and the automatic transmission working well in all ratios.
At 15 years old, this is a car that’s in truly remarkable condition for its age and which deserves to be looked after and enjoyed for many years to come.
It’s also a Golf Automatic, so therefore a highly desirable car.
In 1.6 FSI form, it is also exempt from London’s ULEZ charge, which may well make it worth the journey up the A11 for those who live in the capital.
