Description

Welcome to the reluctant sale of my amazing 1992 SAAB 900S turbo convertible. A rare opportunity to acquire a rust free, genuine low mileage 900 in exceptional condition with a documented solid history.

History:
The V5 shows 3 previous owners prior to me. The car was supplied new in 1992 by SAAB dealers ACE Kensington, London to a Mr Goodman, the invoice shows that with a few options, like electric seats, he paid the not inconsiderable sum then of £28, 849 for it. He owned a publishing business and initially registered the car in the company’s name. In 2004 he transferred it into his own name, making him technically the second owner. He lived in an apartment in Mayfair where he kept the car in the ideal environment of an underground car park and used it infrequently because of his central London location. The actual second owner was a gentleman who lived in Putney S. W. London and bought the car in 2008 to add to his collection of 900s. Once again it was garaged and used sparingly. I bought the 900S from him in 2016 when he decided to downsize the collection. At that time the mileage was 51, 000 and it is now 65, 000, meaning that in my 8 year ownership I have averaged just under 2, 000 miles per annum - almost exclusively dry, summer use. I have also stored the car in a ventilated garage throughout the time I have owned it.

Maintenance:
Throughout my ownership and the previous owner’s (i. e. since 2008) the car has been serviced regularly by well known SAAB specialist Steve Meredith at his Paradise Workshop, Romsey. He has also maintained the underseal and rustproofing with Dinitrol products. Condition:
The result of this car’s pampered life is its amazing condition and very low mileage for a 31 year old car. It is in original, standard, condition and drives like a new car without the creaks and rattles that often come with these old SAAB convertibles. The only things I have done to it have been a bonnet and boot respray about 3 years ago as there were a few chips and scratches. I also had a Quick-Shift fitted to the gear lever, a popular mod for 900s which makes the gear change more positive, as the standard SAAB gear change can feel a bit like stirring porridge! The previous owner had the softop roof replaced and it is in pristine condition with it’s working heated rear window. The Black paintwork is stunning and almost unmarked. The interior, leather upholstery, engine bay and boot are all in great condition. Owners manual and toolkit are all present and correct. Toyo Proxe tyres all round which have lots of tread.

That is all good but the big plus point about this car is it’s solid corrosion free condition which I have tried to convey in the photographs I have taken of its underside. There are two 1-2 cms spots of surface rust on the underside of each door which are hardly noticeable and have never got any worse during my ownership. However the trouble spots you find with many old 900s i. e. driveshaft tunnels, wheel arches, sills, boot floor are all corrosion free. The car has never seen the welder’s torch or had any corrosion advisories on MoT, which is rare for these cars. Check the MoT history. Many of those offered for sale may look shiny but underneath they are full of rust problems - not this one!

Conclusion:
This is an exceptional honest example of the Classic 900 that should provide many years of pleasurable ownership to whoever buys it. I am reluctant to sell it but a change of lifestyle means that the car will get little use in future and it is time for me to let it go. Other than cleaning it up I haven’t done anything special to prepare it for sale, its not a show car, but it could be with minimal work. I will retain the personal number plate shown in the photos and the car will revert to its original number J201 CHV. The MoT test certificate expires in September 2023 and I’m happy to arrange for a new MoT and annual service, if the purchaser wants and the full asking price of £10, 500 is paid.
