Description
Aermacchi arguably produced the most highly developed and successful overhead valve 250cc single racing motorcycle ever made.
Despite a lack of ultimate success in Grand Prix, the Aermacchi Ala d'Oro (Golden Wing) single was outstandingly successful at national level and with Alberto Pagani's 9th place on the model's debut at the 1960 Dutch TT and the 5th at the Belgian Grand Prix the model is still regarded as the most successful overhead valve 250cc single ever.
Today having benefitted from anther 5 decades of development the bike still remains a competitive force in historic motorcycle racing. This ex works bike is the 2nd of 5 Ultra Short Stroke models produced, the engine number being U903. The single cylinder machine has a 4 stroke engine having a bore and stroke of 74mm x 58mm, and a 5 speed transmission with a dry clutch.
The bike was supplied to renowned racers, sponsors and dealers Monty and Ward of Kingston Twickenham and later Edenbridge in Kent .
The bike was then purchased by short circuit star Martin Ashwood who campaigned it in the late 1960's and 70's.
Norfolk based Dennis Batchelor was the next owner, who rode it with great success, he then sold it to Aermacchi importer Syd Lawton.
Prior to the present owner the bike was owned and prepared by Dave Smith of Quay Engineering who won the 1989 Lightweight Classic Manx Grand Prix on a similar machine.
The bike is fully raced prepared and will make a competitive race bike and or a great bike to parade at major events.
The quality of the engineering and the components make it a great value machine and an exciting opportunity.
The bikes comes with a file containing notes and comments from importer Syd Lawton.
