Cars Always,
Kelly DietrickBy the time OSCA 750S #768 competed on March 26 in the 1960 Sebring 12 hour race it was already an important part of Sebring history. Three marques– OSCA, Deutsch Bonnet and Porsche had won the Index (or more properly the Coefficient) every year since the race became a 12-hour event in 1952.
In 1960 both OSCA and Porsche lived up to past history by sweeping the first five places on Index. As a matter of fact the margin of victory was a very slender 6/ 10, 000 of an index point.
An OSCA 750 S driven by John Bentley and Jack Gordon edged a Porsche RS60 driven by Oliver Gendebien and Hans Herman for performance honors. They had an index that came out to 1. 4306 and 1. 430 respectively. Following in third place with an index of 1. 3745 was the Porsche RS60 of Bob Holbert and Ray Schechter. Fourth was this Osca 750S (#768) driven by John Fulp and David Cunningham driving for Luigi Chinetti Motors North American Race Team (N. A. R. T.) with a score of 1. 3619 and scoring second in class.
Gordon and Bentley wanted to continue their success at the 1960 24 Hours of LeMans to take place at the Circuit de la Sarthe in France. They knew that there was not enough time to get their OSCA 750S prepared for the endurance race so they rented an OSCA 750S from Luigi Chinetti's N. A. R. T.
The American team soon realized that this was the second in class winner Fulp and Cunningham OSCA (#768) that they competed with at Sebring just a few months earlier.. Despite driving rain for most of the 24 hours the team finished 18th among the classified finishers and in front of two of the 850cc DB Panhards. They didn't win the index but they did place third and second in the 850 class.
