Description
This is an MGB which has been developed as the B should have been in the 1970s.
FDM 909K was bought by its previous owner as a project in 1993. It had done a 100000 miles and was bought as a solid running car but with the intention of carrying out a complete restoration and then developing ra high performance MGB.
It went initially to Bristol MG Workshop where all the body panels except the boot lid were discarded. The chassis then had any rust cut away and repairs to the sills, floorpan etc carried out, to the stage where it was ready for new body panels. The labour to this point came to over £3000.
The body shell was then shot blasted, painted with stone chip, seam sealed and built up to a rolling chassis (see the photos) with as invoices show, all new or reconditioned parts.
At the end of 1995 it went to Henfield Auto Bodies where the new body panels were fitted, with as the invoice says, special care to be taken “with regard to ensuring all gaps are even”. Wax was injected into all box sections and the body painted.
During the next three years the project was completed with either new or reconditioned parts. The gearbox and diff were reconditioned the engine rebuilt and a reconditioned overdrive purchased and an alternator fitted.
Its condition now is as it was in 1999 i. e. Superb
Its specification now, is briefly as follows :
It has covered 23700 miles with ;
A 1935cc engine, which was rebuilt to suit the new larger pistons.
A Kent stage 1 cam
Weber carburettor
Electronic ignition
Oil cooler
A collector stainless exhaust manifold and stainless exhaust
All other parts such as rocker gear, cam followers, oil pump, distributor, vernier gears etc were replaced at the rebuild.
It also has uprated suspension, telescopic shock absorbers, a Ron Hopkinson handling pack, poly bushes, a new steering rack, new servo, copper brake pipes etc etc
And EZ electric power steering
In the last 400 miles it has had a complete new clutch with new slave and master cylinders, gearbox and diff levels checked. A brake fluid change. A new timing cover gasket. Fresh antifreeze and oil and filter change, I have had MGBs previously, I love their shape and style but have always been disappointed by their performance, especially as modern cars have got faster and easier to drive. This B with its superb performance, road holding of a modern car and power steering is a classic to enjoy, not just for its looks and open air motoring.
This B is what a B should have been 50 years ago !
