Pontiac Firebird Formula V8
A super example, has just come from long term enthusiast ownership of 10 years with all the common LT1 issues addressed, dry use, dry stored South of England car arriving in Scotland only last month. Imported in the UK in 99 and HPI clear, low mileage for year.
Fortunes spent on it over the last few years and just recently. New auto gearbox, new Optispark ignition, engine rebuild 10k miles ago, new engine sensors, mostly all new suspension, wishbones, shocks etc. Just had a new waterpump and the important upgraded Optispark unit, high power starter motor and Yuasa battery, major service, spark plugs, fluids and filters, AC system refurbed, you name it has had it. Must be one of the most well sorted 4th generation Firebirds or Trans Ams. A ring binder full of American Specialist invoices totalling many thousands along with all old mot’s, its original owners manual and all 3 keys with remote locking fobs.
Finished in factory bright red with charcoal leather, it's a rarer non T-top car which saves a multitude of problems with leaks and wind noise. Expensive Borla exhaust system which sounds sublime but not intrusive when driving, recent new Dare 18” alloys and tyres all round, original wheels also available. New black headliner, lovely interior, no cracks in the dash, hardly any wear and no sun fading. Working A/ C and upgraded stereo.
Drives extremely well, strong performance, circa 290bhp and handles much better than you’d think (maybe no surprise given that most of the suspension and drivetrain is new or refurbished) Brakes nicely in a straight line and the gearbox/ transmission which was new only 30k miles ago is very precise and responsive both up and down the gears with kickdown requiring only a jab of the throttle pedal. Factory LSD or ‘Posi’ which has been recently serviced, and working ‘transmission performance’ button. No untoward slack in any of the drive train, engine maintains excellent oil pressure and water temp in even in hot stop start traffic with no oil burning.
Bodywork is nice and straight, no previous accident damage, paint finish and colour is uniform and bright across the panels with no fading or lacquer peel, some ageing with the standard small age related marks just to show it’s honest but nothing nasty or standout, no rust, no scabs or cracks. The trims and seals are all in good order with no perishing. It’s booked in to have the front bumper repainted before sale as there is some light crazing, happy to discuss price if the new owner wished to address it themselves or leave it as is.
The underside is lovely and solid and makes for pleasant viewing, it’s had a light clear Waxoil treatment at some point in the past so nothing is hidden, it’s been preserved very well. The factory spot welds are visible all around the rear wheel arches and the same with the sills which are also completely solid and rust free, there are no signs of any rust repairs or body filler. Nice 4th generation cars like this are becoming increasingly rare both here and Stateside and are safely depreciation proof, just look at the prices of the earlier cars.
Guaranteed to put a smile on your face and superb value given condition and all the recent expenditure, it should prove to be an enjoyable investment for the next owner having had all the hard work done. Sensibly priced, given it’s now 30 years old is sold as is with any inspection welcome. Currently mot’d till September and can be freshly mot’d for a year if required. Part exchange almost anything interesting car or motorcycle.
