Description

Here for sale is my Proton 1. 5SE Manual Saloon from 1992 and a spare Proton used for bits.

Known as the Saga in Malaysia and other territories but they were never called that here in the UK, these early Proton were Mitsubishi Lancer MK2 that was built under licence by Proton in Malaysia with a few little diffences here and there but are essentially the same car.

Often the model designation here in the UK was just the trim level and if it was an auto or not I. E. mine is Proton SE Auto (no longer an auto). Its a first gen pre-facelift model, Proton facelifted this model at the end of 92, so mine is just before the facelift took place. It has every option that was offered when new (except Aircon, if that was offered?) and is fitted with the "Puma" . body kit, which was a special edition which basically was a normal Proton with a body kit, no engine mods or anything. Proton did loads of special edition models, who knows if this was Puma model from new but regardless it has the body kit now which looks great.

Mine is silver on the outside brown on this inside and looks glorious.

Shockingly nippy for a 1. 5L, way quicker then our 2. 0L Rav 2 door.

I've done so much to the car, here's some stuff I've done:

New engine with 45, 000miles on it swapped at 117, 000 miles as old engine started knocking at the bottom end.
Engine serviced with new head gasket, new oil, new seals, new cam belt, bearing and water pump at 117, 000 miles.
Manual swapped (was a 3 speed auto) with new Manual 5 speed Gearbox, pedal box, lever, cables and so on with 30, 000miles on it at 118, 500 miles.
Carb rebuilt with Keyster parts from Japan. Auto choke rebuilt with new parts.
Distributor rebuilt.
New wheel bearings all round.
New front shocks
New rear shocks
New track rod ends
New heavier duty drop links from later model Proton
Genuine Rays lightweight split rim wheels from the late 80's in lovely condition with matching tires all round.
Upgraded classic led light that simulate original halogen bulbs from classiccarleds. co. uk
Rebuilt sunroof with new seals.
NOS fuel filler neck.
Serviced every 1500 miles or so.

Got a donor Proton which is an 8 valve 1. 5L 1989 lower spec model with only 30, 000 miles on it from new which is in ludicrously good mechanical condition, the shell is good and could easily go back on the road.

I purchased it blind off a guy on a Facebook group with basically no info or pictures and it was a million time better then I was expecting when it was delivered. I was in 2 minds to even break it as it drove fine after cleaning the carb. But mine was mot'd and road worthy and had all the desirable stuff (better interior, electric windows, power steering, more powerful engine and so on) this one wasn't legal at all so its been used for bits. I had even thought about swapping everything to this car as the shell is older and would be tax and MOT except 3 years sooner. But anyway I have swapped most things mechanical from that car to this Proton except engine parts as its an 8V engine where mine is the more powerful 12 valve engine.

Not all parts that have been changed from one car to the other are because they were knackered, its just the low millage car is so good that I wanted all the best parts on one car. But my 1992 cars original parts are surprisingly good for the millage.

Parts changed from that 89 Proton to 92 Proton are:

Driveshafts
Complete front end excluding shocks.
Rear springs
Callipers, knuckles, discs, pads, control arms, anti roll bar bushes, various ball joints and bushes.
Boot lid which has been resprayed in matching silver as mine was damaged and had some rust.
all locks and ignition barrel.
Radiator.
Engine mounts.

Tons of spares including new carb, new dizzy, new larger radiator from later models, Paint for repairs and so on.

Virtually no rust, all glass and lights have still got the number plate printed on them from new.

Paintwork and bodywork is great. Odd mark here and there.

Interior is in excellent condition, everything works, has 60/ 40 rear folding seats, all dials work and I've added a GPS LCD speedo to give it that Back to the Future look.

Tons of paper work from new with V5 and keys

The car is great and isn't perfect like any car of this age but there ain't many out there better then this one, in looks or condition.

Only bad bits are:

The surround for the gear lever rubber gator doesn't fit the original automatic gear lever surround and the manual gear lever surround from the 89 car is the wrong colour and shape.

Front grill was badly damaged by a reversing high bed van, so repaired it and modified it and it looks ok but not perfect. Obviously there is an undamaged spare grill from the other car if you want to fit that one.
