Description

Owned since 1967 but stored until 2000's when a total restoration was carried out. At this time it was modified to reflect the appearance of the track racing Rumis which were so successful in the Monthlery 24 hour races in the 50's. The main mod was to the engine where the original cylinders and pistons were replaced with later items from the Piaggio Typhoon 80. This increased the capacity from 125 to 150 and added reed valves and later Dellorto carbs as well as expansion exhaust pipes. The appearance was changed by the deletion of the crash bar and footshields which were replaced by rear-set footrests, gear change and rear brake pedals. An extra fuel tank was crafted in a matching style and a racing style seat. To complete the transformation the front and rear mudgards were replaced by light weight fibreglas items and original optional drop handlebars replaced the standard upright bars. All of the original items were carefully stored.
In this form I used it regularly and participated in a number of tours organised by the French Rumi Club but increasing age has limited my ability to adopt the crouched riding position so in the last two years I have converted it back to the original standard factory appearance but retaining the uprated engine for a more comfortable performance on the road. All of the modified parts are included in the sale so that the new owner can if desired revert to the cafe-racer style. In addition included are original engine parts so the the engine can be returned to factory spec.
This Rumi is in first class running order with beautiful paintwork and good chrome. Lights, brakes etc all work as they should and front and rear brake lights have been added. The Rumi Formichino is a most unusual product of Italian engineering and artistry. It was undoubtedly seen as futuristic when it was introduced in the 50's which appealed to many like myself then and even now. The characteristic sound and better than average performance added to its desirability and gave it the name as the Ferrari of scooters. When examining the care and craftmanship that went into every little detail it cannot be a surprise that many have regarded the Rumi as a thing of beauty. This example is true to its creators intention and is fully ready to be enjoyed both on the road and as an objet d'art.
