Selling this rare pre facelift 1983 w126 on behalf of my neighbour. He garaged it in 2003 where it stayed until last year. I did everything needed to get it an m. o. t. (The last it ever needed) and kept on to it for a bit to check everything was running nicely but now need to sell it on to clear up space.
The work I have carried out is; new spark plugs and ht leads, new battery, all new suspension and steering joints on the front end, original brake calipers professionally restored and serviced, new brake discs and pads, new used tyres, new used fuel pump and all new fluids etc. I also welded one of the jacking points as it had rusted through (I am a professional welder) but other than this there was very little rust underneath. There’s probably more but I forget as I did it over a long period.
The body work is in ok condition for a car if it’s age, it has a few small rust patches around the arches and a few dents and scratches spread around the car. I didn’t want to get into sorting the body work as I think this best left to it’s new owner who can decide on what quality they want to do this to, I also don’t mind these sorts of things so would probably keep it as is if I was keeping it. It has very nice mono block wheels which are bubbling a bit so these could do with some treatment too.
The interior is again in ok condition for it’s age, there’s wear on the leather and the back seats are in the wrong colour although right style (pre face-lift). Bits of trim are bent/ cracking. As with the exterior it’s fine as is but there are improvements to be made if so desired.
Other than cosmetic issues the things which need addressing still are; as is common for this era of Benz, the odometer and fuel gauge are not working. I tried fixing the odometer by changing the little plastic cogs which can be the issue but unfortunately this did not work, I have not looked into the fuel gauge yet. I assume the odometer broke during storage and I have done less than 100 miles on the car so I think the mileage is very near accurate. There is no radio so a new one needs fitting. A couple of windows don’t open and the drivers seat adjustment switch needs replacing (electrics work just needs new buttons) Other than that it is running and driving nicely so it just needs some love. I have very much enjoyed having this car in my possession and will be sad to see it go, it’s a great run around and other than the high petrol consumption it is actually very cheap to run, it’s just qualified as a VHI so is m. o. t., ulez and tax exempt and insurance is very cheap. It is really fun and comfortable to drive and as it was top spec at the time it has a lot of mod cons for a VHI; electric windows, sun roof and seat adjust and central locking on the key.
I don’t need to big up the car too much, if you know you know, this era of Benz were some of the best cars ever built and it’s currently insured so any doubts get in touch and I’d be happy to take you for a test drive.
