GP MADISON BOAT-TAIL ROADSTER, CDP 309K
The Madison Boat Tail was a two-seater open tourer kit car produced between 1978 and 1990. The car was designed by Neville Trickett, inspired by the 1930's Packard cars as well as the Auburn Boat-tail Speedster. I understand that there are currently 9 Madison Roadsters registered in the UK with the DVLA.
This Madison, in a very eye catching bright red, used the chassis and mechanicals from a 1972 registered CDP 309K Volkswagen Beetle as its donor car. The body and tub were made from GRP panels, making the car very light so the 1647cc VW twin-port air-cooled petrol engine gives plenty of performance. Right hand and rear wheel drive, 4 speed manual gearbox. The wheels are genuine 1960s Chevrolet stainless steel wire and the mascot is a winged Wolseley ‘W’.
The engine sounds great and has an upgraded carburettor and some bugpack parts, installed by the previous-before-last owner.
A new rear bulkhead with two storage areas behind the seats was also installed and the seats also improved by being custom made, set further back on runners and lower to enable much more flexibility on who can fit into the car, as well as looking through the windscreen rather than over it. With the bulkhead changed the car is now without doors, but easy to step into. With the seats further back sometimes the rear tyres touch the inside top of the rear wheel arches when going over big bumps. I'm 17 ½ stone though so that will be contributing to that!
There is no roof but we had a tonneau cover made to cover the seating area when away from the car. One nic in the passenger front left wheel arch and some crazing at the driver’s rear. Please see the set of photos.
The car has a current MOT, valid to 29 June 2026 and mileage as at 30 June 2025 MOT date was 48, 855, so a slight increase in mileage since the photo taken at 48, 849. The car is running really well and is perfect for this time of year for open-top summer driving!
My mother was the last owner, with the car bought by my father for Christmas 2016 (when she was 75!) and after a lot of fun driving it now is the time to for the car to have a new home.
