Description

IWL TROLL1 (IndustrieWerk Ludwigsfelde Touren Roller mk. 1) bought as a project 10 years ago I recommissioned this Troll with an engine rebuild , a modern 12v 120w electronic ignition and new tyres and cables, seat rebuild, it's fairly recently had another new set of tyres and I've replaced the chain and rear brake drum and brake shoes. I've toured into France , Belgium and even into Germany on it and it's proven very reliable and economical and with a mindset that it'll do 50/ 55mph it's very comfortable with a sit up and beg position. The engine is actually quite generic being ex-GDR it's the MZ ES150 unit with a modified cylinder and cooling arrangement, forced air into cowlings by an enclosed fan driven by a little V belt on a pulley off the crank. Parts are readily available from MZ dealers and other bits body and accessories sundries and consumables from several German dealers.
Obviously things are slower with a loaded trailer especially up hill but on the flat around 45mph and I've pulled it to a couple of local rallies about 70 miles away full of camping gear.
The trailer is an IWL Campi made for the scooters in the same factory and is a large aluminium body on a generic part of the IWL Berlin scooter chassis and has the same wheel as the scooter. It sits well and is well behaved following the scooter with it's swan neck hitch on a pivoted and bushed towing bracket. The trailers are hard to get hold of even in Germany and are a large part of the value of the combination. I found that under a home respray the colour was exactly the same as the main colour of the scooter so spent some painstaking hours with acetone and bits of plastic and have removed all the respray and had the lid painted the same as the scooter panel work as they were. The whole machine is by no means mint it's got a used patina to it and the light beige is all original. It's very 60's eastern bloc and quirky and does turn heads and would make for a great show piece but the machine is actually very capable and tolerant , I'm quite attached to it especially considering the recommission and the fun i've had with it but I've allowed myself to become a bit swamped in stuff so it's not getting the use now. Some history of its 2 original GDR owners 1963-79 and beyond on a photocopy (DVLA lost the originals) 7985 (about 4500 miles) is current km on new speedo since old one started playing up .
