Reducing my collection so no swops. Jeff Sledge of Richmond , Virginia was the CEO of the Edsel Owners Club of America and proud owner of this car. When he passed away in 1996 his good friend Eddie Clarkson of Stockton in the North East of England bought it from Jeff’s estate. At the time it only had 37000 miles on the odometer , it now has 48000.
Eddie was known as Mr Edsel as he owned cars from the three model years of the Edsel. I bought it from Eddie’s widow six years ago. I also bought his 58 model although from a different owner which now resides in a museum in Limassol, Cyprus.
Edsel was launched as a separate make by Ford in September 1957 with a massive fanfare including an Edsel TV show starring Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong but the car was a sales flop. The plug was pulled on Edsel after only three years losing the mighty Ford Motor Company $250 million and almost putting them under. However yesterday’s loser is today’s winner as the low sales figures of the time make Edsel a rare sight today helping retain their values compared to more common brands.
