The car is a really, really good example of one of these R170 SLKs. There is a huge gulf now between the cherished examples like this, and the examples that have been in daily use on wet and salty roads in city centres! A good example is a genuinely enjoyable thing to drive, a bad or baggy one is no fun at all.
The drive
In a nutshell the car drives faultlessly! It feels as tight to drive as the day it left the factory. There are no noises from the suspension, the engine pulls like a bullet train, the gearbox is smooth and cosseting, the brakes strong and powerful. It drives exactly how you would hope a 51, 000 mile Mercedes would.
One of the great things about this era of SLK is that you can pop it on a classic car insurance policy and just use the car as a weekend/ holiday toy. Equally, with the folding metal roof you can also enjoy it all year round if you wished.
The 230 Kompressor is the model to have I think. It has all the performance of a V6 but without the appetite for petrol, yet has a level of performance that an SLK200 simply wouldn’t recognise.
The engine puts out as near as makes no difference 200 bhp and with the supercharger there is always oodles of overtaking grunt, no matter the speed or gear you are in. With a top speed nearing 150mph you could embarrass some pretty focussed sports cars in one of these if you wished.
Equally you can just waft down the road, letting the automatic gearbox do its thing and cover plenty of miles in comfort – trip to France or Italy in the cars…no problem in one of these!
Exterior
The car presents very, very well indeed. There is the odd superficial mark if you want to go looking but I would say the car is one of the best SLKs of this vintage presentation wise.
The paint gleams, the plastics and rubbers are in great condition – with a private plate on you simply would never guess the car’s age!
The AMG alloy wheels are also in great condition and the branded tyres are practically new so there won’t be any expense there for years.
Overall it is in stunning condition, and you wouldn’t think twice about taking it to a classic car show for instance.
The interior
Once again, it’s all good news. The plastics are completely free of the normal peel and stickiness SLKs tend to suffer from. The leather is clean and in fantastic condition as are the carpets, buttons and pretty much anything you can see.
The roof lining has even been upgraded to a lovely soft to the touch Alcantara suede.
To top things off, everything in the interior works as it should.
Mechanically
I have just had a mechanic go through the car and make sure everything is ‘just so’ because I want the new owner to be able to enjoy the car from the off without having to worry about anything that might go wrong. Of course, it is a modern classic car so there are no guarantees but anything the mechanic thought needed sorting has been, so the car has no stories to tell and is ready to be enjoyed. By way of example the car has had new coil packs and leads, plugs, alternator, battery, all filters, a BAS module and an oil change.
It starts on the button first time every time, and you have NONE of the concerns you have with some modern classic cars if you don’t use them regularly – this one will happily sit in wait until you want to use it, fire up straight away and have no hissy fits or histrionics.
The deal
I am slimming down my collection of cars at the minute (the Mrs has suggested it has got out of hand) so realistically no part ex’s please, unless you have something very interesting?
