Here we have a one off chance to acquire a timeless classic that is well known as one of BMW’s best built and handling BMWs of its time …the R80ST.
The R80ST only lasted from 83 to 85, just under 6000 bikes were built.
Not only did it exceed expectations in its day, this bike has had a whole new and unique design make over to make this a truly one of a kind motorcycle.
Not only does this bike massively stand out from others, it has always been the main attraction wherever it has been taken, so many people ask me what year it is, one even asking me if it was the new BMW model!
When I bought this bike 4 years ago, I acquired it from a BMW enthusiastic and his collection. From the get go, it was already a low owner, low mileage UK bike with 25, 000 miles. My plan was to completely take it apart, back to the frame, having the frame and swinging arm professionally powder coated, and a custom subframe made in Germany to simply bolt on to it so that it would not ruin the aesthetics of the bike in any way. The engine was already in a good, originally low mileage state so I did not want to disturb anything as I liked the fact that it was all originally and how it should be. The only thing I have done to the engine is have it professionally vapour blasted, a new sump and rocker cover gaskets, new clutch plate and friction plate and a new bolt kit. As these BMW’s struggle with the old starters, it has had a high output starter motor fitted to help with its easy starting.
The carburettors were fully dismantled, vapour blasted, and completely re built with all new jets, floats, needles, and rubber diagrams, and a tasteful extra of manual pull chokes from Motorworks.
When it comes to the comfort of the bike. It has a superb handling. YSS shock on the rear and progressive spring conversion in the front forks. The forks were rebuilt , the legs were vapour blasted and genuine GS gaiters fitted. To help with the handling and comfort, it has had fitted tomeselli handle bars, with full custom Venhill cables, switch gear is original, in superb condition, and just keeps the feel of riding something from the 80’s.
It has had a Daytona digital speedo fitted, to add to the modern design. It has also got CNC headlight mounting brackets made in Italy. And a superb LED headlight. It also has been fitted with a GS front mudguard, and a rear daccar mudguard adding to this timeless, enduro look.
The tank is from a R65 for longer range and just a nicer looking tank for what the vision of the design was going towards. It has been fully custom painted by a professional body shop in a stunning Bluey / grey colour, with a painted and layered over pinstripe. Brand new genuine BMW tank badged and Le Mans aluminium flip up fuel cap.
The seat is custom to the subframe and fits perfectly.
The ride of the bike is flawless and the sound of the bike is distinctive and different. This is helped by a full stainless, made in Germany header pipes, brand new stainless Rearbox and an aluminum short end can fitted with all stainless clamps and bolts.
When it comes down to the feel on the road, this is delivered through the Dunlop trial max TT trial tyres, followed by Mitchelin Tubes. It has the original BMW akront rims, which were fully vapour blasted as well as the hubs, fully replaced with stainless spokes, re built by. Very well known wheel builder, hagon Motorcycles.
The wiring has been completely gone through, brand new exile battery. The front brake calliper fully rebuilt, powered by a good ridge hose.
There has been no money spared on this bike as you can tell and was built from a real labour of love and passion. This is One of many different bikes I have worked on, rebuilt or customised over the years, and I am a self confessed perfectionist so you can be assured it has been done right!
This bike truly is for the enthusiast.
